Ship owner, philanthropist Martinos selected as new civil governor of Mt. Athos

Well-known shipowner and philanthropist Athanasios Martinos has been selected by the Mitsotakis government as the next civil governor of the semi-autonomous Orthodox monastic community of Mt. Athos, Orthodoxia News Agency reports.

The choice of Martinos was, reportedly, viewed in a positive light by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, as well as the Orthodox Patriarchs of Alexandria and Jerusalem, as well as by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece.

The well-known shipping executive is known as a generous benefactor of all the Athonite Monasteries.

Former Mt. Athos governor Aristos Kasmiroglou, who had served for years in the influential post, will be appointed as the deputy civil governor, assuming much of the day-to-day administration – on the part of the Greek state – of the venerable monastic community.
