Romanian Heroes’ Cross in Slovenia rededicated following restoration efforts

The memorial cross honouring Romanian Heroes in the Slovenian town of Miren-Kostanjevica, recently restored with support from the Romanian Embassy, was rededicated last Friday, October 25.

The monument, erected in 2010 in honour of soldiers from the Romanian 43rd Caransebeș Regiment who fell during World War I, was a joint project initiated by the Romanian Embassy and implemented with the collaboration of the local administrations in Caransebeș and Miren-Kostanjevica. Restoration efforts were deemed necessary due to severe weather significantly deteriorating the monument.

The rededication service, led by Father Pavel Goreanu, the priest of the Romanian community in Ljubljana, was followed by a memorial prayer for the fallen Romanian soldiers and a flower-laying ceremony.

Numerous officials attended, including representatives from the Romanian Embassy in Slovenia, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense, the Austrian and Slovak Embassies, and the City Halls of Caransebeș and Miren-Kostanjevica.

Last week’s service is part of a broader program commemorating thousands of Romanian soldiers who fought on the Isonzo front in World War I and are buried in cemeteries across Slovenia.

The program was initiated as part of the 2021 Commemorative Year of the Departed, emphasizing cemeteries’ cultural and liturgical importance. To date, memorial services have been held for Romanian soldiers in 12 military cemeteries throughout Slovenia.
