Romanian Gov’t strengthens commitment to support three main projects of Metropolis of Bessarabia

After the commemorative ceremony held on March 27 in the city of Ialoveni to mark 105 years after the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, the President of Romania’s Chamber of Deputies visited the headquarters of the Metropolis of Bessarabia together with several Romanian dignitaries.

At the meeting, officials of the Romanian government committed to financially supporting three key projects of the Metropolis.

March 27, 2023, was a historic day for Bessarabia and Romania. The two countries reaffirmed their strong ties through the Metropolis of Bessarabia, the Metropolis of Bessarabia noted on its website.

The agenda included financing the restoration works for the building, which will be handed over free of charge by the Chisinau local authorities to the Metropolis of Bessarabia.

Assurances were also offered that the Government of Romania would guarantee additional clerical positions for all clerics who wish to return “to the bosom of the Mother Church,” i.e. the Metropolis of Bessarabia within the Romanian Patriarchate. Mr Marcel Ciolacu pledged to supplement the salary contributions through the State Secretariat for Religious Affairs.

The third significant project that the Government of Romania will support is the painting and furnishing of the Metropolitan Chapel of Saint John the Theologian and the headquarters of the Metropolis. It will be implemented in 2023 through the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova.

As a sign of gratitude, the Metropolitan of Bessarabia awarded Mr Marcel Ciolacu the “Metropolitan Gurie Grosu” Order.

Alongside Marcel Ciolacu, the official delegation included Robert-Marius Cazanciuc, the Vice-President of the Romanian Senate, Titus Corlățean, Senator of Romania and Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, the Romanian Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova.
