Romanian Government advances Religious Freedom Day proposal

The Romanian Government authorised a draft law on November 14 that establishes the National Day of Religious Freedom and the Contribution of Faith Communities to Romanian Society. This day will be observed annually on May 16.

The draft law suggests organising cultural, religious, and educational events to respect religious freedom and the relationship between the state, religious denominations, and other faith-based organisations.

Central and local authorities will have the opportunity to establish partnerships with religious associations and denominations to coordinate cultural and religious events during this event.

In 2000, the Declaration of Religious Denominations for Romania’s Integration into the European Union and NATO was signed, and the date of May 16 is symbolic.

The proposed law will be submitted to Parliament for ratification. Romania officially acknowledges 19 religious denominations.
