Preaching beauty and the longing after God: More Romanian monasteries open Instagram accounts

Monastic settlements, secluded places where discretion and tranquillity prevail, also have substantial photographic potential. As a result, more and more Romanian monasteries and hermitages have chosen to be present on Instagram, a social network dedicated to multimedia content.

Although monks do not need a virtual identity, by managing these accounts of the monasteries they belong to, they preach beauty through images of monastic landscapes, moments of prayer or work, videos with hymns or the sounds of semantron and bells. These are exhortations to purity and holiness, a call for longing after God.

The Basilica.ro team, one of the most representative institutions of the Church in the online environment, is aware of the presence of monasteries on social networks and often promotes them, especially in the Week in Pictures article.

The pandemic period has encouraged the presence of parishes and monasteries on social media. As for Instagram, it has been noted that most monastic establishments have increased their activity on this social platform over the last two years, and at least 20 new accounts have been opened.

Among the most followed monasteries on Instagram are Putna, Radu-Vodă and Oașa.

The 10 newest accounts opened by Romanian monastic settlements on Instagram are Darvari Skete, Părhăuți Monastery, Cozia Monastery, Sânandrei Monastery, Comandău Monastery, Celic Dere Monastery, Bârnărel Skete, Slatina Monastery, Sihla Monastery, Sihăstria Putnei Monastery.
