His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, received the monastic tonsure 39 years ago at the age of 36.
His monastic sponsor was St. Cleopas of Sihăstria, one of the great spiritual elders of Romanian Orthodoxy, who was canonised by the Holy Synod in 2024.
The monastic tonsure took place at Sihăstria Monastery on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, August 6, 1987.

Theological studies and episcopal ministry
Born on July 22, 1951, in the village of Dobrești, Timiș County, Romania, the future Patriarch received the baptismal name Dan-Ilie. He was the third child of schoolteachers Alexie and Stela Ciobotea.
After graduating from the Theological Institute in Sibiu, he continued his doctoral studies in Bucharest under the guidance of St. Dumitru Stăniloae and later pursued advanced academic research abroad.
His entrance into monastic life in 1987 marked the beginning of a new stage of service in the Church. Three years later, in 1990, he was consecrated a bishop and served for several months as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Timișoara before becoming Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina on June 7, 1990.
During his years in Iași, he initiated and supported numerous pastoral, administrative, and educational projects. These included the consolidation and restoration of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the establishment of the Providența Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, the first Romanian Orthodox Church hospital officially accredited by the Ministry of Health.
Election as Patriarch
In September 2007, he was elected Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. During his patriarchate, numerous projects have been developed in the pastoral, social, educational, and communications fields while preserving the continuity of the Church’s liturgical life and traditions.
One of the most significant undertakings of this period has been the construction and consecration of Romania’s National Cathedral, dedicated to the Romanian heroes and placed under the patronage of St. Andrew the Apostle.
During the early years of his patriarchate, the Basilica Media Centre, the official media institution of the Romanian Patriarchate, was established to communicate the Church’s activity in the public sphere. At his initiative, the Holy Synod also instituted, in 2009, a Sunday dedicated to Romanian migrants, expressing solidarity with Orthodox communities in the diaspora.
During the same period, the Romanian Orthodox Church significantly expanded its charitable and social outreach by developing a network of more than 800 social institutions and services.
Throughout Patriarch Daniel’s ministry, the Romanian Orthodox Church has also proclaimed the canonisation of numerous Romanian male and female saints.
