Metropolitan Petru welcomes replacement of term “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language” in all official pieces of legislation

In a message to the speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, His Eminence Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia congratulated the initiative and expressed his support for the draft law on replacing the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language” in all official pieces of legislation of the Republic of Moldova, including the Constitution.

The bill’s first reading was voted on last Thursday during the plenary session of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia noted that this bill “is an act of bravery and a remarkable step towards restoring the historical truth of our language and ethnic identity.”

“Your attitude becomes the worthiest way to honour the effort of our forefathers, who defended ethnic and linguistic belonging with the price of blood. Their state of sacrifice, which they lived impetuously, contributed vehemently to the persistence over the centuries of the nation’s consciousness, the holy faith, the Romanian language and feeling, until today,” Metropolitan Petru told the Moldovan lawmakers.

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia expressed his belief that replacing the phrase “Moldovan language” with the term “Romanian language” would contribute to consolidating national identity and promoting Romanian spiritual values.

“This action is necessary to eliminate confusion and restore a truth that brings clarity and coherence to the legislative text by recognizing that the Romanian language is the official language of the Republic of Moldova, the most important component of the cultural heritage of our nation.”

“Our Romanian Church, respectively we, the Metropolis of Bessarabia and the Exarchate of the Territories, who are a living member in the Body of Christ and a beacon of light for those who seek justice and historical truth, have been making efforts for 30 years to strengthen communication and fraternal communion between the Christians on the two banks of the Prut River, through this sacred desire of the national language which is the Romanian language.”

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia encouraged the Parliament members “to continue this important step and adopt the draft law in the second reading, to complete the process of replacing the phrase in all official documents of the Republic of Moldova.”
