President Maia Sandu meets Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia, highlights Church’s role in promoting peace and social support

His Eminence Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia met with President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Chișinău.

President Sandu emphasised the essential role played by the Romanian Orthodox Church, through the Metropolis of Bessarabia, in the lives of local communities, not only as a guardian of Christian values but also as a promoter of peace, dialogue, and hope, according to a statement from the Metropolis.

Her Excellency underscored the importance of institutional collaboration and encouraged the continuation of partnerships aimed at doing good in society—supporting the vulnerable, educating youth, and preserving the Republic of Moldova’s spiritual heritage.

In response, Metropolitan Petru thanked President Sandu for her openness and support for the Metropolis of Bessarabia, affirming that the Church remains a pillar of hope for the people, not only spiritually but also through tangible initiatives: social projects, youth programs, and the public promotion of Christian values.

The meeting also included discussions on the importance of preserving the cultural and religious identity of Romanian communities in the Republic of Moldova. Metropolitan Petru expressed his hope that this encounter would mark a step forward in building a fruitful cooperation between Church and State.
