Four Athonite Elders will be canonized, Ecumenical Patriarch announces

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has announced that four Athonite Elders will be canonized and will have official feast days in the calendar of the Orthodox Church.

The list of elders include Fr. Daniel of Katounakia, Fr. Ieronymos of Simonopetra, Elder Joseph the Hesychast, and Elder Ephraim of Katounakia.

The Patriarch made the announcement on Sunday, October 20, during his meeting with the representatives of the monasteries on Mount Athos in Karyes.

Patriarch Bartholomew was welcomed by the Protepistates of Mount Athos, Elder Symeon of Dyionisiou, and other members of the Sacred Epistasia at Protaton monastery where the Axion Estin icon of the Mother of God is kept.

‘Holiness is the quintessence of this place, and our Saints are what our Church has of greater price,’ the Patriarch of Constantinople said in his address, Orthodoxia reports.

This is the seventh time Patriarch Bartholomew is visiting Mount Athos in his capacity as Patriarch.
