Foundation stone laid for church of St. Cyril of Jerusalem in Republic of Congo

On Monday, July 22, 2019, the faithful of the city of Kakanda welcomed Bishop Meletios of Katanga, with great enthusiasm.

The Metropolitan and his escort arrived at the land donated to the Metropolis by the Greek-African Michael Kouvas and determined with the technicians the exact location of the Temple, Romfea News reports.

In the end the Metropolitan referred to the great importance of the event by saying that “where a temple is founded, devil’s power is expelled from there” and thanked the donors in Greece who contributed to turn the need of the faithful of the city into reality.

As a representative of the donors, Archimandrite Vasilios Giannakas of the Metropolis of Nea Smyrni said inter alia: “The foundation stone symbolizes Christ and our faith in Him. In this faith, the Church was founded and built and no force was able to overpower it.”

The Holy Diocese of Katanga was established by Patriarchal and Synodal decree on 1st November 2006, at first as the Holy Diocese of Kolwezi, late changing its name on 9th October 2009 to Diocese of Katanga. Its spiritual jurisdiction includes the great region of Katanga of in the Congo.
