Decisions of the Holy Synod of the Polish Orthodox Church

The Holy Synod of the Polish Orthodox Church met on Tuesday, 22 March 2016, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Sawa, Archbishop of Warsaw and Metropolitan of All Poland, in the presence of all the archbishops and bishops.

During the Synod:

  1. The correspondence of His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew regarding the life of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople was presented;
  2. The official visit to Poland of His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, was announced, which will take place during 16-22 August 2016.
  3. The invitation of Metropolitan Pavlos of Drama (Orthodox Church of Greece) to the festivities dedicated to St Paul the Apostle, which will take place during 4-5 June 2016, in Veria, was accepted. On behalf of the Polish Orthodox Church have been appointed to participate: His Grace Grzegorz (Gregory) Surpaski, and Archimandrite Atanazy (Athanasius) Nos, abbot of Jabłeczna Monastery.
  4. The Communiqué of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding the situation of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia was taken into consideration, and the Synod expressed its satisfaction with the solving of the administrative problem of this Local Church.
  5. Talks have been carried regarding the activity of the Brotherhood of the Orthodox Youth in Poland. The new leadership of the Brotherhood was approved: Maciej Owsiejczukiem (president) and Fr. Pawel Szwede. His Grace Bishop Grzegorz Surpaski was appointed responsible for the Brotherhood on behalf of the Holy Synod of the Polish Orthodox Church. The Holy Synod addressed thanks to His Eminence Jakubow, Archbishop of Białystok and Gdańsk, for his work of many years with young people.
  6. The report referring to the issues addressed to at the ninth Polish Conference of the Methodological Advisers and Inspectors for Religious Education was read out.
  7. Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Chelm was appointed to the leadership of the Polish Ecumenical Council, after the termination of the office of His Eminence Jeremiasz, Archbishop of Wroclaw and Szczecin.
  8. The draft documents of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, that is to take place during 18-27 June 2016, in Crete, have been discussed. Metropolitan Sawa, together with the Archbishops and the Bishops of the Orthodox Church of Poland, four priests and three laics will participate at this event.
  9. The report of each diocese regarding the activities carried out in 2015 was validated. The Synod also discussed about the life of the Church in the last year.
  10. Church distinctions have been awarded to different clerics and laics on Easter 2016.
  11. It was decided to organize a fundraising for the restoration of some churches:
  • Zapalow – October 2016;
  • Bydgosycy – November 2016;
  • Kwiaton – December 2016;
  1. The Easter message was approved.
