In his 2024 Christmas Pastoral Letter, Bishop Ambrozie of Giurgiu calls for a return to authentic Christian values and compassion, urging the faithful to cut through the overwhelming noise of media and ideologies. Highlighting the joys and sufferings that shape the Christian journey, he emphasizes the Church’s mission to serve others and uphold the teachings of Christ in a challenging world.
The Church’s Mission Amid Suffering
Bishop Ambrozie stressed that the Orthodox Church remains committed to those in suffering, rejecting any alternatives contrary to Christ’s teachings.
“There is much pain in the world, perhaps more than ever. We encounter many people struggling with severe illnesses, often ignored and treated as inferior by others in every respect,“ he noted.
He further criticized the overwhelming noise of media and ideologies claiming to care for human rights, which drown out the cries of those in pain:
“Because of the deafening noise of mass media and ideologies that pretend to care for humanity and its rights, we no longer hear the anguished cries rising from the hearts of so many around us.”
The Church’s Role in a Changing Society
Bishop Ambrozie reflected on the Church’s relevance in a society less focused on Gospel teachings. He recalls the words of Saint Paul to the Corinthians:
“When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.“ (1 Corinthians 4:12–13)
Pastoral, Missionary, and Philanthropic Projects
The Diocese of Giurgiu has initiated numerous pastoral-missionary, social-philanthropic, and cultural-educational projects. Despite infrastructural challenges, a bank loan allowed the purchase of a property to support philanthropic activities.
“This has led to the establishment of pastoral-cultural and catechetical centres throughout the diocese, hosting activities for students and young people.”
Bishop Ambrozie underscored the need for not only informational education but also formative education:
“We need authentic role models and spiritual benchmarks as we aspire to a nation where normality, decency, and honesty once again become the primary values promoted within the educational system.”
He lamented a society offering young people superficial solutions while denying them consistent inner formation and distancing them from the authentic models that history and culture provide in abundance.
Closing Reflections
In concluding his message, Bishop Ambrozie invoked the principle of renewing the world through the child, a foundation of pedagogy emphasized by theologian Nichifor Crainic, born in Bulbucata, Giurgiu County.
