Cernica Monastery to host canonization proclamation for Saint Dumitru Stăniloae

The Archdiocese of Bucharest has announced the program for the local proclamation of the canonization of the Holy Confessor Priest Dumitru Stăniloae, scheduled for October 2–4, 2025.

The main liturgical events will take place at Cernica Monastery in Ilfov County and will be preceded by the blessing of the reliquary for the saint’s relics, to be performed by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel at the Patriarchal Residence.

Program

Thursday, October 2 – Patriarchal Residence

2:00 p.m. – His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania will bless the reliquary of the confessor priest in the historic Chapel of St. George the Great Martyr at the Patriarchal Residence.

Friday, October 3 – Cernica Monastery

3:30 p.m. – Reception of the reliquary at St. Nicholas Church on the island of Cernica Monastery;
4:00 p.m. – Vigil service in honour of the Holy Confessor Priest Dumitru Stăniloae (Great Vespers with Lity and Matins) celebrated by the delegate of Patriarch Daniel together with the monastic community of Cernica Monastery;
8:00 p.m. – Conclusion of the vigil.

Saturday, October 4 – Cernica Monastery

8:00–9:00 a.m. – Akathist of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae and the Third and Sixth Hours;

9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Divine Liturgy celebrated by the designated clergy in St. Nicholas Church of Cernica Monastery. After the ambo prayer, the Synodal Tomos for the local proclamation of the canonization of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae will be read, followed by the presentation of his icon and the chanting of his troparion.

In 2024, the Holy Synod approved the canonization of sixteen confessor saints from communist prisons and great spiritual fathers, including Saint Dumitru Stăniloae.

On February 4, 2025, the general proclamation of their canonization took place in Bucharest, followed throughout the year by local proclamations of canonization in the dioceses where they dedicated their lives to God.
