Bp Teofil of Iberia gives the example of St Ioannikios the New: We need much silence and stillness in our hearts

His Grace Assistant Bishop Teofil of Iberia celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Cenicientos Monastery in Spain on its patronal feast of Saint Ioannikios the New of Muscel on July 26, 2022.

A fragment of the relics of the patron saint is kept in the monastery’s church.

The Assistant Bishop to the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Spain and Portugal offered the example of Saint Ioannikios, noting that “to hear God’s voice in our hearts requires much silence and stillness.”

“This is why the Venerable Ioannikios withdrew into a cave and prayed without ceasing. For the same reason, we too, monastics or lay people, must flee from speaking in vain, seeking as much silence and interiorisation as possible.”

“Of course, there is also a need for unceasing prayer. We need a daily schedule of prayer, of attending the divine services, but we can, and must, convert all our thoughts into prayer. Let us live everything in the presence of God and relationship with Him. Even sins, if we convert them into a prayer of repentance, can become a fertiliser of the spiritual life,” His Grace underlined.
