Assistant Bishop Timotei of Prahova of the Archdiocese of Bucharest officiated an all-night vigil service at Samurcășești Monastery on Saturday in honour of St Eulogia. The bishop highlighted the saint’s humble love for the Church.
“Who would have believed some 80 years ago, when she was laid here in a humble grave at the beginning of the totalitarian regime, that a humble nun would one day be brought into the church because she loved the Church more than she loved herself or anything else?” His Grace said.
The Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bucharest highlighted the missionary work carried out by St Eulogia the nun-martyr in villages across Wallachia.
“Day after day, she was among the villages, working with children and preparing hymns and festive programmes in the churches.”
A great blessing
In a statement to reporters from the Basilica Media Centre, Bishop Timotei said that Samurcășești Monastery was experiencing a moment of great blessing.
“One of the nuns who laboured ascetically and proclaimed the words of truth is returning here, welcomed with the honour due to her after the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church numbered her among the saints.”
The bishop said St Eulogia was a model of proclaiming the faith for both laypeople and monastics.
“Although she lived here for a relatively short period, Venerable Eulogia was a model for monastics and young people, and a model for Christian missionaries. She remains the same model until the end of the ages.”
A model of Christian love
Mihai Răzvan Clipici, Patriarchal Adviser with the Culture, Painting and Restoration Department of the Patriarchal Administration, also spoke about the mission of St Eulogia of Samurcășești.
“I believe St Eulogia is a model of Christian life and of love for those in need, because she helped many sick children and many poor people. She used to spend her birthday at soup kitchens, serving food to those in need.”
“She is a model of Christian love and also a great intercessor for us before God, given that many miracles have taken place since her repose.”
The local proclamation of the canonisation of St Eulogia took place on Sunday at Samurcășești Monastery following the Divine Liturgy.
The Holy Synod canonised St Eulogia of Samurcășești in 2025 and established her feast day for 19 December.
