Benelux Orthodox Bishops approve theological seminar on ecology for 2026

A theological seminar dedicated to ecology will take place in Paris on 12 September 2026, with the aim of fostering lasting cooperation among theological institutes in France and the Benelux countries. The decision was taken at last week’s meeting of the Orthodox Bishops’ Conference of Benelux (OECB).

Those present included Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate), Archbishop Symeon of Domodedovo of the Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate), Bishop Dositheos (Patriarchate of Georgia), and Auxiliary Bishop Joachim of Apollonia of the Archdiocese of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate).

The hierarchs prayed for the repose of the soul of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia, of blessed memory, conveyed their best regards to the newly elected Patriarch Shio III of Georgia, and condemned the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Other Decisions

An important decision confirmed the establishment of a “trust commission”, regarded as an indispensable instrument for preventing all forms of abuse and ensuring transparency within Church communities. The measure is intended to fulfil the hierarchs’ commitment to protecting minors and vulnerable persons from potential abuse.

The bishops also devoted particular attention to the legal status of recognised religious communities, seeking to ensure the recognition of clergy and military chaplains as essential pillars of spiritual care within public institutions.

The issue of religious education in Flanders was highlighted as a priority area within the school system.

The hierarchs also gave their blessing for an Orthodox summer camp, which will take place from 1–8 August at De Hoge Rielen in Belgium, providing young people with a valuable setting for fellowship and communion.

In addition, the members of the OECB decided to organise a pilgrimage to the Pays de la Loire region of France, with particular emphasis on visiting the Monastery of St Silouan the Athonite.
