Romanian Patriarch offers condolences after Spain high-speed train crash kills dozens

Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Daniel has offered a message of compassion and solidarity following one of Spain’s deadliest rail disasters in over a decade, a high-speed train collision near Adamuz in Córdoba province that killed at least 39 people and left scores more injured.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening when a high-speed Iryo train from Málaga derailed as it entered Adamuz station and veered onto the opposite track, colliding with an oncoming Alvia service between Madrid and Huelva, officials said.

The crash, which involved roughly 400 passengers and resulted in widespread devastation and a major emergency response, led Spanish authorities to suspend rail services between Andalucía and Madrid and declare days of national mourning.

In his message of condolence, Patriarch Daniel conveyed sympathy not only to the victims and their families but also urged members of the Romanian community in Spain to offer practical and spiritual support to those affected, emphasising prayer and compassionate service amid the tragedy.

We learned with deep sorrow of the tragic railway accident that occurred near the town of Adamuz, in Córdoba province, in southern Spain, a tragedy that resulted in at least 39 deaths and left more than 100 injured.

In these moments of great suffering for the families of those who have died, we extend our sincere condolences and assure them of our full compassion and solidarity.

We are also close to the injured, who are now receiving medical care, and we pray for their swift recovery.

At the same time, we urge Romanian Orthodox faithful living in Spain to offer material and spiritual support to those affected, through acts of mercy, prayer, and words of consolation and encouragement.

We pray to God for the repose of the souls of those who have died and for the healing of those hospitalised. We stand with the Spanish people, who are now going through moments of profound suffering and grief.
