Bucharest to host three-day celebration honouring relics of Saint Demetrius the New and Saint John Chrysostom

On Sunday, July 13, 2025, the Romanian Orthodox Church will celebrate the Translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Demetrius the New to Bucharest. On this occasion, a series of liturgical events will take place from July 11 to 13, 2025, according to the following schedule:

Friday, July 11, 2025

09:00 – 10:45 – Divine Liturgy celebrated inside the Patriarchal Cathedral.

13:00 – 13:30 – Reception of the delegation from Vatopedi Monastery, which will bring the honourable skull of Saint John Chrysostom. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, accompanied by an assembly of clergy, will welcome the relic and officiate a special service in the Patriarchal Cathedral.

Following the service, Patriarch Daniel will offer a welcoming address to the delegation, led by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Ephraim of Vatopedi.

The relic of Saint John Chrysostom will then be placed near those of Saint Demetrius the New to be venerated by the faithful inside the Patriarchal Cathedral.

13:30 – 14:30 – Akathist hymn to Saint John Chrysostom.

16:00 – 19:00 – Vespers with Artoklasia and Paraklesis to Saint John Chrysostom.

Saturday, July 12, 2025

09:00 – 11:30 – Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service celebrated in the Patriarchal Cathedral.

16:00 – 20:00 – All-night Vigil in honour of Saint Demetrius the New.

Sunday, July 13, 2025

07:00 – Procession with the relics of Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Nectarios, Saints Constantine and Helen, and Saint Demetrius the New, followed by their placement for public veneration in the Baldachin of the Saints.

10:00 – 12:30 – Divine Liturgy celebrated at the Outdoor Altar by an assembly of bishops, priests, and deacons.

16:00 – 18:00 – Vespers and Paraklesis to Saint Demetrius the New.

The relics of Saint John Chrysostom will remain available for veneration until Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
