Sibiu residents can test their lung health for free during the anti-smoking campaign “Health for the Community. I Breathe, Therefore I Exist,” organized by the Pneumophtisiology Hospital of Sibiu.
The consultations will take place on Thursday, May 29, between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, in the courtyard of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sibiu (33 Mitropoliei Street). Free spirometry tests will be administered, and individuals with detected lung issues will be referred for further medical investigations.
Smoking: A Sin Against Life
The event is being organized in collaboration with the Metropolis of Transylvania. His Eminence Metropolitan Laurențiu emphasized that health is a divine gift that must be respected and that smoking, through its harmful effects, is a sin against life — mainly because it harms not only the smoker but also others, particularly children.
“Smoking severely damages health and leads to addiction, resulting in a slow death. We must promote a culture of life and health, and quitting smoking is a vital step in that direction,” stated the Metropolitan of Transylvania.
About Spirometry
Spirometry is a simple, noninvasive, and highly effective test used to detect lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis early. Pulmonologist Dr. Iulia Oaida explained that this method is essential for diagnosis, disease progression monitoring, and risk assessment before surgical interventions.
Upcoming Events
The anti-smoking campaign, held between May 20 and June 5, includes various activities: student counselling, public awareness actions, and the well-known “Apples for Cigarettes” initiative, where smokers are encouraged to exchange their cigarettes for an apple — a project organized with Sibiu Red Cross on Nicolae Bălcescu pedestrian street.
The campaign will conclude on June 3 with the conference “Health for the Community. I Breathe, Therefore I Exist”, hosted by the Faculty of Medicine in Sibiu in the Aula Magna, starting at 6:00 PM. Attendance is free, subject to available seating.
