Bishop Calinic officiates final Memorial Service for Metropolitan Jacob, Venerable Fathers Silas, Paisios and Nathan

Memorial Service for the Putna Saints

In accordance with the Orthodox tradition, His Grace Calinic of Botoşani, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Iaşi, officiated Saturday evening the final Memorial Service for Metropolitan Jacob of Putna, as well as for the Venerable Fathers Silas, Paisios and Nathan before the proclamation of their canonisation to take place. The service was officiated at the Holy Apostles Chapel of the Putna Monastery.

Several Romanian hierarchs and many faithful attended the service.

The formal Rite of Glorification begins with a final Memorial Service for the person about to be canonised, after which Vespers and Matins with special hymns to the saint are chanted and the saint’s icon is unveiled. The saint’s life is published and the date of his or her commemoration is established. The other Orthodox Churches are notified of the glorification so that they can place the new saint’s name on their calendars.

The canonization ceremony of the Putna Saints – Hierarch Jacob of Putna, Metropolitan of Moldova, Venerable Fathers Silas, Paisios and Nathan – will take place Sunday, 14 May 2017, at Putna Monastery. His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, will lead the ceremony.
