Romanian Language Day is celebrated annually on 31 August and celebrates Romanian identity and cultural heritage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Romania, the observance was established in 2013, while in the Republic of Moldova it has been marked since 1990, following the national revival movement of the late 1980s.<\/p>\n

According to Radio Rom\u00e2nia Cultural<\/a>, the celebration marks a decisive moment in the region’s history between the Prut and Dniester rivers. On 27 August 1989, the Great National Assembly met in Chi\u0219in\u0103u, where about 750,000 people joined a demonstration calling for Romanian to be declared the state language and for a return to the Latin alphabet.<\/p>\n

On 31 August 1989, the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR adopted legislation giving these demands official effect. Beginning the following year, the date became a national celebration.<\/p>\n

The observance was initially known as Our Romanian Language (Limba noastr\u0103 cea rom\u00e2n\u0103), before its name was changed in 1994 to Our Language (Limba noastr\u0103).<\/p>\n

Celebration in Romania<\/h2>\n

In Romania, a legislative initiative to establish Romanian Language Day at the end of August was launched in 2011. The Senate adopted the bill in December 2011, followed by the Chamber of Deputies in February 2013. Law No. 53\/2013<\/a> was promulgated on 13 March 2013 and published in the Official Gazette on 19 March.<\/p>\n

Under the law, public authorities may organise cultural and educational events, commemorative activities and academic events. These may be held both in Romania and through diplomatic missions, cultural institutes<\/a> and other Romanian institutions abroad.<\/p>\n

Romanian communities in neighbouring countries have also affirmed the importance of the Romanian language. In 2011, several Romanian associations and organisations in Serbia, Bulgaria and Hungary agreed that, beginning in 2012, they would celebrate 31 August as Romanian Language Day.<\/p>\n

In 2026, Ukraine officially established Romanian Language Day<\/a>. The decision was made during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy\u2019s visit to Romania on 12 March. A series of events<\/a> marking the occasion will be held in several Ukrainian cities.<\/p>\n

The celebration has become an opportunity to affirm the bond between Romanian communities and their linguistic and cultural heritage, regardless of the borders of the countries in which they live.<\/p>\n
