{"id":584167,"date":"2026-08-14T11:27:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T08:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=584167"},"modified":"2026-08-14T11:27:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T08:27:01","slug":"bessarabian-deportees-faith-soviet-exile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/bessarabian-deportees-faith-soviet-exile\/","title":{"rendered":"Bessarabian deportees carried their faith into Soviet exile, Romanian priest says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fr Viorel Cojocaru, cultural adviser to the Archdiocese of Chi\u0219in\u0103u, explained in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/doxa.md\/pr-viorel-cojocaru-deportatii-basarabeni-l-au-luat-pe-hristos-cu-ei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doxa<\/a> how Bessarabians deported from the province during the Soviet period preserved their faith and hope in God amid suffering.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The priest said that although they were forced to abandon their homes and possessions, many of those deported \u201ctravelled with Christ in their arms\u201d through the icons they took with them, bearing witness to \u201can authentic faith and an extraordinary trust\u201d in the face of tragic circumstances.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEven in the most difficult times of crisis, they turned directly to divine providence, to God. We see that during the deportations, those who suffered had great trust in God, and it was precisely in this context that they managed to survive.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Drawing on testimonies from descendants of those who were deported, Fr Cojocaru recalled the ordeal of families forced to leave their homes at very short notice: \u201cThey abandoned their dowry chests, their homes and their furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey all took their icons with them. So that Christ would not be plundered, they took Him with them,\u201d Fr Viorel Cojocaru said, explaining that by choosing to preserve them, \u201cthey managed to transform suffering from something devoid of value into something of genuine value\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>The living memory of confessors of the faith<\/h2>\n<p>The cultural adviser also recalled <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/metropolis-bessarabia-local-canonisation-saint-blandina-iasi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Blandina the Confessor of Ia\u0219i<\/a>, recently canonised by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, who herself endured imprisonment during the Soviet period and, through that suffering, drew closer to the Saviour.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhile she was in Kazan, in a prison in Russia, Christ appeared to her wearing the crown of thorns. She kept drawing near to wipe away the blood flowing from His head, wounded by the thorns. She then realised that if Christ suffered, suffering can bring us deliverance,\u201d the priest said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fr Viorel Cojocaru stressed the importance of praying for those who endured persecution and deportation, saying that their witness to the faith remains relevant to generations today: \u201cWe have a duty to pray for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe prayers of those who suffered for our dignity, our faith in Christ and our freedom will bring about the unity of the people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During the Soviet regime, three major waves of deportations affected the population of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina: on the night of 12\u201313 June 1941, on<a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/romanian-orthodox-1949-soviet-deportation-victims-moldova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 5\u20136 July 1949<\/a>, and between 31 March and 1 April 1951.
