“Christ’s peace is not the absence of the storm, but victory over it,” Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Paisie of Sinaia explained on Sunday. “God has not promised us a life without trials, but His presence in every trial.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Evangelist thus shows that true peace is not simply the disappearance of hardships, but Christ’s presence in the midst of His disciples, the bishop added.<\/p>\n

In the Church, Christ Remains Present Forever<\/h2>\n

The Lord Jesus Christ “did not promise us a sea without waves, but a boat that will not sink because He Himself is in it,” the bishop emphasised. “He did not promise that we would never fall, but that whenever we cry out like Peter, ‘Lord, save me!’, His hand will always be stretched out toward us.”<\/p>\n

This, he said, explains why the Holy Fathers saw the boat as a metaphor for the Church: “Because the Church is the place where Christ remains present and active until the end of the ages.”<\/p>\n

In this context, Bishop Paisie recalled the words of St Dumitru St\u0103niloae, who said, “The Church is Christ extended with His deified Body into humanity.”<\/p>\n

The Church, he explained, “is not merely the community of those who believe in Christ, but the place where Christ Himself continues to be present, to give Himself to humanity, and to unite people through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Church’s strength does not lie in her organisation or in the worthiness of her members, but in the unceasing presence of Christ, the Head of the Church.”<\/p>\n

The Storm Reveals Christ as God<\/h2>\n

The bishop also said that the miracle of Christ calming the storm is not fundamentally about the storm or about the faith of the Holy Apostle Peter, but about Christ’s divinity.<\/p>\n

“Christ did not allow the storm in order to show the apostles how weak they were, but so that they might discover more deeply who He is. The storm became the place of revelation, and the trial became an occasion for confession of faith.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“The centre of this Gospel is not the storm, nor the boat, nor even the Holy Apostle Peter. The centre is Christ. Everything else\u2014the sea, the wind, the night, the disciples’ fear, and even Peter’s boldness\u2014becomes the setting through which Christ the Lord reveals Himself.”<\/p>\n

Keep Your Eyes on Christ, Not on the Waves<\/h2>\n

“As long as Peter’s eyes remain fixed on the Lord, the waves cannot overcome him,” the bishop explained.<\/p>\n

But when the Apostle Peter turns his gaze away from Christ and towards the waves, his faith begins to weaken.<\/p>\n

“This is one of the most important lessons for contemporary humanity,” Bishop Paisie continued.<\/p>\n

“We live in a world where our attention is constantly drawn to whatever provokes fear: wars, economic crises, insecurity, illness, violence, division, and alarming news. Without even realising it, the soul begins to live more from fear than from faith.”<\/p>\n

“The Gospel teaches us, however, that the direction of our gaze determines the stability of our hearts. Whoever loses Christ from the centre of life begins to be ruled by fear; whoever keeps Him before the eyes of the soul finds the strength to move forward even over the highest waves,” the Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop stressed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We Cannot Save Ourselves<\/h2>\n

Bishop Paisie also explained how Peter escaped from drowning: “The moment he begins to sink, Peter does not try to save himself, nor does he hide his weakness. He utters one of the shortest and most powerful prayers in all of Scripture: ‘Lord, save me!'”<\/p>\n

“It is not a prayer adorned with many words. It is not a display of piety. It is the sincere cry of someone who knows that without God he cannot be saved.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Holy Apostle Peter stepped onto the water out of love and a desire to be as close as possible to Christ.<\/p>\n

“It is not the miracle that attracts him, but the Person of Christ. He does not wish to prove anything before the other apostles; he simply longs to reach his Teacher as quickly as possible.”<\/p>\n

Bishop Paisie delivered the sermon on the Gospel of Christ, calming the storm during the Divine Liturgy he celebrated at the Patriarchal Cathedral.<\/p>\n
