Former Romania national team coach Mircea Lucescu was laid to rest on Good Friday, with hundreds of mourners\u2014family members, relatives, friends and admirers\u2014attending the funeral in Bucharest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The funeral service took place at Saint Eleutherius the New Church in Bucharest and was officiated by His Grace Assistant Bishop Timotei of Prahova of the Archdiocese of Bucharest, together with an assembly of priests.<\/p>\n

During the service, the bishop read the message of condolence<\/a> sent by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel following news of the renowned coach\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

After the service, tributes were delivered by Romanian Football Federation (FRF) president R\u0103zvan Burleanu, businessman George Copos, and R\u0103zvan Lucescu, the late coach\u2019s son.<\/p>\n

A trailblazer in football<\/h2>\n

FRF president R\u0103zvan Burleanu highlighted Mircea Lucescu’s exceptional stature. \u201cHe was not only a coach or a brilliant former footballer. Above all, he was a trailblazer\u2014a visionary who understood the football of the future ahead of everyone else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor him, football was not just a job\u2014it was a vocation. He loved the pitch, the ball and the spirit of competition with an almost mystical intensity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Burleanu also pointed to Lucescu\u2019s international impact, noting reactions from leading clubs such as Real Madrid<\/a> and Galatasaray<\/a>, as well as football bodies including Serie A<\/a> and UEFA<\/a>. Moments of silence<\/a> were held at matches across European competitions this week.<\/p>\n

He stressed Lucescu\u2019s deep attachment to Romania\u2019s national team. \u201cFor him, it was like a child\u2014a child he raised and loved unconditionally. He gave it everything: his experience, his time, his health and, in the end, his last reserves of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not know whether there is such a thing as an end for a man, but I firmly believe that Mircea Lucescu ended his life exactly as he would have wished\u2014in service of football, to the very end. He left us still engaged, active, dreaming of his next project,\u201d Burleanu added.<\/p>\n

A devoted family man<\/h2>\n

Burleanu also spoke about Lucescu\u2019s human side beyond sporting achievements. \u201cThere was a man of rare sensitivity, for whom family was a solid anchor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe radiated pride when analysing R\u0103zvan\u2019s matches. His eyes lit up instantly when speaking about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were perhaps the only ones able to disconnect him from football and remind him of the simple beauty of life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also highlighted Lucescu\u2019s deep bond with his wife: \u201cHe gave us the most beautiful lesson in loyalty and pure love through his devotion to Mrs Neli.\u201d<\/p>\n

A global Romanian<\/h2>\n

George Copos described Lucescu as a unique personality. \u201cMircea Lucescu was not only the greatest among us, Romanians. He was a global Romanian\u2014a brilliant man, an ambassador of Romania,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He recalled the coach\u2019s humble beginnings and total dedication to football. \u201cHe was a child who rose from nothing, coming from a large family where everything had to be shared,\u201d Copos said, adding that Lucescu played a key role in transforming Rapid Bucharest and leading the club to the 1999 title after a 35-year wait.<\/p>\n

He also noted that Lucescu\u2019s greatest achievement was his family. \u201cMircea Lucescu built the most beautiful family. He raised his successor, R\u0103zvan, with great care\u2014someone who will match his achievements,\u201d Copos added.<\/p>\n

\u2018He was and remains my father\u2019<\/h2>\n

Visibly affected by the loss, R\u0103zvan Lucescu delivered an emotional speech. \u201cHe was my father, and he will always remain my father. He loved Romania with all his being,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was born into great poverty, in a shack. He educated himself and sought to educate others. He was a fighter\u2014he fought, he won, he lost, he was happy, he was saddened\u2014he went through all the possible and impossible situations that life can offer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He thanked all those who stood by him during these difficult moments. \u201cI hope with all my heart that he is now somewhere above us, smiling and saying: it was all worth it, I am fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I, as his son, want him to be happy for everything he achieved,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Final honours<\/h2>\n

After the ceremony, the coffin bearing the body of the former national team coach was carried by a Romanian Gendarmerie honour guard and received military honours as it left the church. He was then taken to his final resting place at Bellu Cemetery.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday and Thursday, Lucescu\u2019s body lay in state at the National Arena stadium, where around 15,000 people came to pay their final respects, according to a post on the Romanian national team\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n
