{"id":557984,"date":"2026-02-03T10:48:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T08:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=557984"},"modified":"2026-02-03T10:48:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T08:48:20","slug":"un-world-interfaith-harmony-week-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/un-world-interfaith-harmony-week-february\/","title":{"rendered":"UN marks first week of February as World Interfaith Harmony Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The first week of February (1\u20137 February) is observed annually by the United Nations as <a href=\"https:\/\/worldinterfaithharmonyweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Interfaith Harmony Week<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The initiative was proposed at the UN General Assembly on 23 September 2010 by King Abdullah II of Jordan and was adopted unanimously on 20 October 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is rooted in the 2007 A Common Word project, which encouraged dialogue between Muslim and Christian leaders based on two shared fundamental commandments: love of God and love of one\u2019s neighbour. These principles are regarded as essential and provide a solid theological foundation for mutual understanding and peace.<\/p>\n<h2>Event dedicated to dialogue<\/h2>\n<p>During the week, an event titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/interfaith-harmony-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strengthening Multilateralism in Times of Global Challenges<\/a>\u201d will be held in Geneva, organised by the Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The event marks the 11th edition of the Geneva Interreligious Dialogue and will bring together ambassadors, high-level representatives of major religious traditions and members of the international community in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week will allow for these groups to become aware of each other and strengthen the movement by building ties and avoiding duplicating each others\u2019 efforts,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldinterfaithharmonyweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official website<\/a> of the initiative states.<\/p>\n<h2>Church participation in dialogue<\/h2>\n<p>The Romanian Orthodox Church actively takes part in interreligious and interconfessional dialogue. Representatives of the religious denominations recognised in Romania and of the Government <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/romania-religious-leaders-government-antisemitism-hate-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met in January 2026<\/a> to discuss the prevention and combating of antisemitism, xenophobia, radicalisation and hate speech, in the context of the National Strategy for the 2024\u20132027 period.<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion, Patriarch Daniel <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/patriarch-daniel-shared-responsibility-interfaith-dialogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delivered a message<\/a> stressing the shared responsibility to promote mutual respect and interreligious dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Romanian Orthodox Church disapproves of antisemitic and xenophobic actions, attitudes and public discourse and reaffirms its constant commitment to fostering peace and social harmony, interreligious dialogue and peaceful coexistence, grounded in the values of love for one\u2019s neighbour, solidarity and mutual respect,\u201d the message said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Romanian Orthodox Church also considers that any form of hatred, discrimination or intolerance is contrary to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and incompatible with the moral values that underpin the Christian faith,\u201d the message added.<\/p>\n<p>Photo: Pexels<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first week of February (1\u20137 February) is observed annually by the United Nations as World Interfaith Harmony Week.
