{"id":553882,"date":"2025-12-24T14:18:37","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T12:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=553882"},"modified":"2025-12-24T14:18:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T12:18:37","slug":"ecumenical-patriarch-bartholomew-euthanasia-complex-moral-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/ecumenical-patriarch-bartholomew-euthanasia-complex-moral-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew calls euthanasia a complex moral challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I said euthanasia is \u201cone of the most delicate and complex contemporary issues our societies are called to confront,\u201d speaking last week at an international conference held at the Phanar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The conference, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hub.uoa.gr\/5o-diethnes-synedrio-eco-ef-zin-apofaseis-gia-to-telos-tis-zois\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawO3cFtleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETA2R25hcGxBVWdtd2pEYWZFc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhiOoMHBqoXt1E1My1fwhrR-wQZDbDHxNZvKf1l1jFE5SQmNSBlkgoW1dpdX_aem_aTdL74dt995nyi6qRgxkmA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Living \u2013 Decisions at the End of Life<\/a>,\u201d took place on December 19\u201320 under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and was organised by the Laboratory of Applied Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"https:\/\/ec-patr.org\/oikoymenikos-patriarchis-emeis-oi-chr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opening address<\/a>, Patriarch Bartholomew stressed that the Church\u2019s position on such matters must always be expressed \u201cwith pastoral sensitivity and not through generalisations or in a legalistic spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Death must not be hastened<\/h2>\n<p>The Ecumenical Patriarch reaffirmed that human life possesses an inherent spiritual dignity, noting that, according to the Church\u2019s teaching, \u201cthere are no limits to the spiritual dignity of the human person, regardless of the extent to which the body or mind may have been affected by the passage of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to suicide, he recalled that it is described as \u201ca tragedy\u201d and \u201ca profound offence against the dignity of the human person,\u201d stressing that it \u201ccan never be regarded as a permissible solution to worldly suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, based on pastoral oikonomia, he said that \u201cthe full funeral service should not, in principle, be excluded\u201d for those who find themselves in such circumstances.<\/p>\n<h2>Death should not inspire fear<\/h2>\n<p>Turning specifically to euthanasia, Patriarch Bartholomew emphasised that \u201ceven in the case of persons suffering from severe illnesses, death must not be hastened,\u201d describing euthanasia as \u201ca practice foreign to the Christian understanding of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He clarified that \u201cit is entirely permissible for persons approaching death to refuse extraordinary medical treatments and technologies that artificially prolong bodily life,\u201d adding that \u201cit cannot be a Christian duty to prolong the suffering of the body out of fear of an inevitable end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Christians who \u201cawait the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come,\u201d the Patriarch concluded, death \u201cin the grace of God should not inspire fear,\u201d since the human being is not a \u201cbeing-towards-death,\u201d but a \u201cbeing-towards-life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photo: Basilica.ro \/ Mircea Florescu<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasilicaNews\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-495171\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif 889w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1024x171.gif 1024w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1536x256.gif 1536w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-2048x341.gif 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I said euthanasia is \u201cone of the most delicate and complex contemporary issues our societies are called to confront,\u201d speaking last week at an international conference held at the Phanar.
