{"id":550975,"date":"2025-12-04T12:48:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T10:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=550975"},"modified":"2025-12-04T12:48:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T10:48:02","slug":"metropolitan-teofan-iasi-national-day-tribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/metropolitan-teofan-iasi-national-day-tribute\/","title":{"rendered":"Metropolitan Teofan pays tribute to Romanian heroes at Ia\u0219i National Day ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Metropolitan Teofan of Moldavia and Bukovina took part on Monday in Romania\u2019s National Day celebrations held in Ia\u0219i.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, the Metropolitan recalled the supreme sacrifice made by Romanian soldiers, as well as the role of the political and intellectual elite who committed themselves to fulfilling this historic national ideal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hundred and seven years ago, Romania \u2014 in all her three historical provinces \u2014 existed in the hearts of Romanians. To become a geographical reality required the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, an exceptional political and intellectual elite, and much help from God (\u2026) God\u2019s help from above and the ability of the elites of that time to set aside disagreements and rivalries led to the fulfilment of a centuries-old aspiration,\u201d Metropolitan Teofan said Dec. 1.<\/p>\n<p>He also quoted historian Nicolae Iorga, who wrote of the <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/tag\/1918-great-union-centennial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Union<\/a>: \u201cThere is so much work to be done that not one generation, but entire generations will have to labour to consolidate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe task of the current generation is all the more necessary because, in the meantime, we have lost part of the territory of Romania as it was in 1918, millions of Romanians have left the Land of Bread for other countries in search of bread, and we are still waiting for an effective land link to unite all the Romanian provinces joined on 1 December 1918.
