{"id":547362,"date":"2025-11-04T10:31:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T08:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=547362"},"modified":"2025-11-04T10:31:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T08:31:34","slug":"budapest-romanian-orthodox-parish-125-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/budapest-romanian-orthodox-parish-125-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Budapest Romanian Orthodox parish marks 125th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Romanian Orthodox believers in Budapest marked on Sunday the 125th anniversary of their parish\u2019s establishment in the Hungarian capital, with a festive Divine Liturgy led by Bishop Siluan of Hungary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Concelebrants for the Divine Liturgy included Hieromonk David Pop, Superior of the \u201cSaint John the Baptist\u201d Monastic Settlement; parish priest Marius Maghiaru, dean of Budapest; priest Cosmin Pop, parish priest in Jaca and Dean of Debrecen; and Archdeacon Emanuel V\u0103duva from the cathedral in Gyula.<\/p>\n<p>His Grace presented a jubilee document to the Budapest parish, recording the main milestones in the Romanian community&#8217;s history in Budapest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe celebrated an important anniversary \u2014 125 years since this independent parish, intended solely for the Orthodox Romanians here in Budapest, has been functioning in this building, which in 1900 was given by the Gojdu Foundation, as a result of the perseverance, the long labour and the ardent desire of the forebearers and leaders of this community,\u201d Bishop Siluan said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The celebration was attended by Gabriel \u0218opanda, Romania\u2019s Ambassador to Budapest; Mioara Pitu\u021b, a senior collaborator at the Embassy; Szucs Balazs, Deputy Mayor of Budapest\u2019s District 7; Gabriela Eleke\u0219, President of the Association of Romanian Orthodox Women in Budapest; and parishioners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important moment for the community, for the people who have come here and who have maintained this church \u2014 this living place of prayer \u2014 during troubled and difficult periods, both for Romanian buildings in Budapest and for Romanians in Hungary. But they have survived 125 years, and I am convinced they will continue without interruption in the future,\u201d Romania\u2019s Ambassador to Budapest said.<\/p>\n<h2>Budapest Romanian Parish<\/h2>\n<p>The Romanian parish, or the \u201cGreek-Wallachian Church\u201d in Budapest, was founded in 1791 by Orthodox Greek, Aromanian, and Romanian believers, who had their own place of worship.<\/p>\n<p>The community was forced to leave its church in Pet\u0151fi Square in 1888 and continued its activities under harsh conditions.<\/p>\n<p>After that stage, representatives of 44 families and the Romanian Orthodox youth in Hungary decided to establish the Romanian parish \u201cNativity of the Holy Prophet John the Baptist\u201d, which continues to function today in a building offered by the Gojdu Foundation in 1900.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, the parish also includes the Romanian Monastic Settlement of Nuns \u201cSaint John the Baptist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Photo: Diocese of Hungary<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasilicaNews\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-495171\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif 889w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1024x171.gif 1024w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1536x256.gif 1536w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-2048x341.gif 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Romanian Orthodox believers in Budapest marked on Sunday the 125th anniversary of their parish\u2019s establishment in the Hungarian capital, with a festive Divine Liturgy led by Bishop Siluan of Hungary.
