{"id":544749,"date":"2025-10-21T12:04:52","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T09:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=544749"},"modified":"2025-10-22T12:17:55","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T09:17:55","slug":"national-cathedral-bronze-doors-50-saints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/national-cathedral-bronze-doors-50-saints\/","title":{"rendered":"The National Cathedral&#8217;s bronze doors: Over 50 Saints depicted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"168\"><strong>The entrance to the National Cathedral in Bucharest is made possible through 27 bronze doors depicting our Saviour Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, the Holy Apostles, as well as several Romanian saints.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"170\" data-end=\"322\">The doors are a distinctive feature of the church; each weighs approximately 800 kilograms and is operated by an automatic opening and closing system.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"518\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">For the solemn consecration on October 26, brochures have been prepared to help the faithful better understand the symbolism of the elements of the National Cathedral of Romania.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"518\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Please find below the French, Italian and Greek translations of the text.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The bronze doors of the National Cathedral<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Entrance into the Romanian People\u2019s Salvation Cathedral is made through a series of monumental gates that are not merely access points, but symbolically mark the crossing from the profane to the sacred, from earth to heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Ascending the steps towards the entrance of the National Cathedral, we are greeted &#8211; upon the main doors &#8211; by the <em>Mother of God<\/em> and by our <em>Saviour Jesus Christ<\/em>. To the left and right of the main doors are three other doors, each depicting <em>two<\/em> of the Twelve Apostles of our Saviour Jesus Christ. This coordinated action ensures not only the rapid evacuation of people but also the expulsion of smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Each door panel weighs around 800 kilograms. To prevent accidents, the opening is continuously monitored, and a magnetic braking system controls the uncontrolled acceleration of the doors.<\/p>\n<p>The doors are connected both to the main electrical grid and to a backup generator. Should the main supply fail, the generator automatically starts, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the safety system.<\/p>\n<p>The more than 50 saints, sculpted upon each bronze door, stand as steadfast guardians watching over the National Cathedral \u2014 silent, yet no less present witnesses to the holiness of this place, the Church of Christ, the dwelling place of the Most Holy Trinity.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/tag\/romanias-national-cathedral-presentation-leaflets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all leaflets in 4 languages here<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Pliant_usi_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaflet in English in *pdf format here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Les portes de bronze de la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019entr\u00e9e dans la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale se fait par une s\u00e9rie de 27 portes monumentales qui ne sont pas de simples voies d\u2019acc\u00e8s, mais elles marquent symboliquement aussi le seuil entre le mondain et le sacr\u00e9, entre la terre et le ciel.<\/p>\n<p>En gravissant les marches menant \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e de la Cath\u00e9drale, les fid\u00e8les sont accueillis par la <em>M\u00e8re de Dieu<\/em> et par le <em>Sauveur J\u00e9sus-Christ<\/em>, dont les ic\u00f4nes figurent sur les portes principales d\u2019acc\u00e8s. \u00c0 gauche et \u00e0 droite de ces portes centrales se trouvent six autres portes, chacune orn\u00e9e de la repr\u00e9sentation de deux des <em>Douze<\/em> <em>Ap\u00f4tres<\/em> du Seigneur. L\u2019<em>Ap\u00f4tre Andr\u00e9<\/em> se tient imm\u00e9diatement aupr\u00e8s de la M\u00e8re de Dieu, en raison de son statut de Protecteur spirituel de la Roumanie et de second Patron spirituel de la Cath\u00e9drale (le premier \u00e9tant l\u2019<em>Ascension du Seigneur<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Le programme iconographique des portes de bronze se poursuit\u00a0sur toutes les faces de l\u2019\u00e9difice, avec plus de <em>20 saints roumains<\/em> et <em>7 saints daco-romains<\/em>, incluant\u00a0des hi\u00e9rarques, des martyrs et des asc\u00e8tes. En cas d\u2019incendie, il est programm\u00e9 pour ouvrir simultan\u00e9ment l\u2019ensemble des 54 vantaux des portes, action permettant non seulement l\u2019\u00e9vacuation rapide des personnes, mais aussi l\u2019\u00e9vacuation des fum\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Chaque vantail p\u00e8se environ 800 kilogrammes. Afin de pr\u00e9venir tout accident, leur ouverture est constamment monitor\u00e9e et un syst\u00e8me de freinage magn\u00e9tique r\u00e9gule toute acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration incontr\u00f4l\u00e9e des portes.<\/p>\n<p>Les portes sont reli\u00e9es \u00e0 la fois au r\u00e9seau \u00e9lectrique principal et \u00e0 un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur de secours. En cas de d\u00e9faillance de l\u2019alimentation principale, le g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur d\u00e9marre automatiquement, assurant le fonctionnement ininterrompu du dispositif de s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Plus de 50 saints, repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s en relief sur chaque vantail de bronze, se tiennent tels des sentinelles c\u00e9lestes, veillant sur la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale, et tels des\u00a0t\u00e9moins silencieux, mais non moins pr\u00e9sents, de la saintet\u00e9 de ce lieu, \u00e9glise du Christ et maison de la Tr\u00e8s Sainte Trinit\u00e9.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Le Porte di Bronzo della Cattedrale Nazionale<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>L&#8217;ingresso nella Cattedrale della Salvezza della Nazione si fa attraverso una serie di porte monumentali che non sono semplici vie d&#8217;accesso, ma segnano simbolicamente il passaggio tra il profano e il sacro, tra la terra e il cielo.<\/p>\n<p>Salendo i gradini che conducono all&#8217;ingresso della Cattedrale Nazionale, alle principali porte d&#8217;accesso ci accolgono la <em>Madre di Dio<\/em> e <em>Il Salvatore Ges\u00f9 Cristo<\/em>. Questa azione coordinata consente non solo la rapida evacuazione delle persone, ma anche del fumo.<\/p>\n<p>Ogni battente pesa circa 800 chilogrammi. Per prevenire incidenti, l&#8217;apertura \u00e8 costantemente monitorata e un sistema di frenatura magnetica controlla l&#8217;accelerazione incontrollata delle porte.<\/p>\n<p>Le porte sono collegate alla rete elettrica principale, ma anche a un generatore di riserva. In caso di interruzione della rete elettrica principale, il generatore si avvia automaticamente, garantendo il funzionamento ininterrotto del sistema di sicurezza.<\/p>\n<p>Gli oltre 50 santi, rappresentati\u00a0 in scultura\u00a0 su ogni porta bronzea, che, come sentinelle, vegliano sulla Cattedrale Nazionale, rimangono testimoni silenziosi, ma non per questo meno presenti, testimoni della
