Major feast days gather thousands of faithful for the Divine Liturgy, as recently witnessed during the pilgrimage to Saint Paraskeva in Ia\u0219i, where approximately 30,000 people attended the service celebrated at an outdoor altar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On such occasions, the Divine Liturgy at the National Cathedral will be celebrated at an outdoor altar, making it possible for more people to take part in the service.<\/p>\n

The summer altar will be set up, when needed, in front of the cathedral\u2019s main porch, allowing the Divine Liturgy to be officiated in the open air. The square at the entrance of the cathedral can accommodate around 23,000 worshippers during religious services.<\/p>\n

The Porticos and Porches of the National Cathedral<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The main access into the National Cathedral is made through a monumental porch with arches, located on the western side. Together with the lateral porticos and those outlining the esplanade, it forms a defining part of the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral.<\/p>\n

The architecture of the Cathedral represents a synthesis between tradition and contemporaneity, harmonising architectural elements from various regions of Romania (Moldavian recessed niches, Br\u00e2ncovenesque porches, and slender Transylvanian towers<\/em>), along with monumental elements inspired by certain Western cathedrals, taking into account the fact that today a large part of the Romanian diaspora resides in the West. The ground plan of the ensemble expresses the liturgical and missionary character highlighted by the very theme of this work of architecture.<\/p>\n

The porch<\/em> at the main entrance, located on the western fa\u00e7ade, impresses by its size and the elegance of its arches. It serves not only a functional role, protecting the entrance, but also a symbolic one, preparing and receiving the faithful for their entrance into the sacred space of the church.<\/p>\n

The median exonarthex, vestibule or foyer, is conceived as an extension of the porch, in the form of an enclosed porch, symbolising liturgical communion and the hospitality characteristic of Romanian spirituality. Three additional open porches are situated on the eastern, southern, and northern sides of the National Cathedral.<\/p>\n

The lateral porticos<\/em>, to the north and south, are annexed structures extended in sequences of columns, designed to define the exterior liturgical space, with a built surface of 5,159.20 square meters and a volume of 28,712 cubic metres. These structures mark the outline of the Outdoor Altar of the National Cathedral. The curved porticos on the south-western and north-western sides, totaling 2,079.60 square metres and a built volume of 15,285.60 cubic metres, mark the principal entrance into the precincts of the Cathedral ensemble.<\/p>\n

The typology of the columns in the porches of the National Cathedral pays homage to one of the most remarkable architectural creations of the national heritage: the style of Neo-Romanian architecture. This represents a re-interpretation of Br\u00e2ncovenesque architecture, with vegetal ornaments carved at the bases of the columns, organic stylisation of stone folds draping the columns, and the delicate structure of volutes and acanthus leaves sculpted into the capitals.<\/p>\n

The symbolic root of the acanthus leaf, chosen as a decorative motif, is connected with the symbol of eternal life. Over time, the plant has become a fundamental element in the representation of rebirth and Resurrection, and therefore is fittingly placed both at the base and at the top of the columns, as a sign of supporting the entire edifice.<\/p>\n

The materials used in the construction of the porches and porticos \u2014 stone and reinforced concrete \u2014 ensure the durability and monumentality of the ensemble, designed to endure for centuries as a testimony of the Romanian people\u2019s faith and national identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Cathedral must be an architectural symbol of the supreme liturgical moment, that of the Holy Eucharist \u2014 the communion with Christ, One of the Holy Trinity. For this reason, it is necessary to represent it through a configuration symbolising the CHALICE.<\/p>\n

The cup of the Chalice will thus encompass the edifice of the Cathedral, wherein the Holy Sacraments will be celebrated. At the centre of the cup rises the church itself, which, as a sign of its missionary and uplifting vocation, will have the Pantocrator dome as its crown, surmounted by the Latin Cross.<\/p>\n

The foot of the Chalice, which symbolises the infinite love of the Holy Trinity embracing the entire created universe, will be represented by rows of lampstands placed in elliptical form, a sign of the Church\u2019s missionary work, its call to the faithful toward humility and repentance, and its invitation to eternal communion with God. These two luminous arms of the foot of the Chalice will define the precinct in which, on the major feast days, the faithful will be able to take part in the Divine Liturgy celebrated outside the Cathedral.\u201d<\/p>\n

Les portiques et les porches de la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale<\/strong><\/h2>\n

L\u2019acc\u00e8s principal \u00e0 la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale se fait par un porche monumental \u00e0 arcades, situ\u00e9 sur la fa\u00e7ade ouest. Ce porche d\u2019entr\u00e9e, avec les portiques lat\u00e9raux et ceux qui d\u00e9limitent l\u2019esplanade, constitue une partie essentielle de l\u2019ensemble architectural de la Cath\u00e9drale.<\/p>\n

L\u2019architecture de l\u2019\u00e9difice repr\u00e9sente une synth\u00e8se entre tradition et contemporan\u00e9it\u00e9, harmonisant des \u00e9l\u00e9ments issus de diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9gions de Roumanie (les niches moldaves, les porches brancov\u00e9niens, les tours \u00e9lanc\u00e9es de Transylvanie), mais aussi des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de monumentalit\u00e9 inspir\u00e9s de certaines cath\u00e9drales occidentales, en consid\u00e9ration du fait qu\u2019une grande partie de la diaspora roumaine vit aujourd\u2019hui en Occident. La configuration spatiale traduit le caract\u00e8re liturgique et missionnaire, inspir\u00e9 par la th\u00e9matique de cette \u0153uvre architecturale.<\/p>\n

Le porche<\/em> de l\u2019entr\u00e9e principale, sur la fa\u00e7ade ouest, impressionne par ses dimensions et par l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance de ses arcades. Outre sa fonction pratique de protection de l\u2019acc\u00e8s, il rev\u00eat une valeur symbolique d\u2019accueil et de pr\u00e9paration des fid\u00e8les avant leur entr\u00e9e dans l\u2019espace sacr\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00e9glise. L\u2019exonarthex m\u00e9dian, vestibule ou foyer, con\u00e7u comme une extension close\u00a0du porche, exprime le lien entre la communion liturgique et l\u2019hospitalit\u00e9 qui \u00e9claire la spiritualit\u00e9 roumaine. Trois autres porches ouverts se trouvent \u00e0 l\u2019est, au sud et au nord de la Cath\u00e9drale Nationale.<\/p>\n

Les portiques<\/em> lat\u00e9raux nord et sud sont des structures annexes, form\u00e9es de suites de colonnes, qui d\u00e9limitent l\u2019espace liturgique ext\u00e9rieur. Ils couvrent une surface construite de 5 159,20 m\u00b2 et un volume de 28 712 m\u00b3, marquant le contour du Sanctuaire d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 de la Cath\u00e9drale. Les portiques curvilignes sud-ouest et nord-ouest, d\u2019une surface totale de 2 079,60 m\u00b2 et d\u2019un volume de 15 285,60 m\u00b3, marquent l\u2019entr\u00e9e principale dans l\u2019enceinte du complexe\u00a0cath\u00e9dral.<\/p>\n

La typologie des colonnes<\/em> des porches rend hommage \u00e0 l\u2019une des cr\u00e9ations les plus remarquables de l\u2019art architectural national : le style n\u00e9o-roumain. Ce dernier r\u00e9interpr\u00e8te l\u2019architecture brancov\u00e9nienne, par l\u2019ornementation v\u00e9g\u00e9tale des bases des colonnes, la stylisation organique des plis de pierre qui les drapent et la finesse sculpturale des volutes et des feuilles d\u2019acanthe<\/em> des chapiteaux. La racine symbolique des feuilles d\u2019acanthe, choisies comme motif d\u00e9coratif, est li\u00e9e au symbole de la vie \u00e9ternelle. Cette plante, devenue\u00a0au fil du temps un \u00e9l\u00e9ment fondamental dans la repr\u00e9sentation de la renaissance et de la R\u00e9surrection, n\u2019est pas plac\u00e9e au hasard \u00e0 la base et dans la partie sup\u00e9rieure des colonnes\u00a0: elle symbolise le soutien structurel de l\u2019\u00e9difice tout entier.<\/p>\n

Les mat\u00e9riaux employ\u00e9s dans la construction des porches et des portiques, tels que la pierre et le b\u00e9ton arm\u00e9, garantissent la durabilit\u00e9 et la monumentalit\u00e9 de l\u2019ensemble, con\u00e7u pour traverser les si\u00e8cles comme t\u00e9moignage de la foi et de l\u2019identit\u00e9 nationale roumaine.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Cette Cath\u00e9drale doit \u00eatre un symbole architectural du moment liturgique supr\u00eame, celui de l\u2019Eucharistie, de la communion avec le Christ, Un de la Sainte Trinit\u00e9. D\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019exigence d\u2019une configuration symbolisant le \u201cCalice\u201d. La coupe de ce calice symbolique englobera ainsi l\u2019\u00e9difice cath\u00e9dral, vou\u00e9 \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration des Saints Myst\u00e8res. En son centre s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8vera l\u2019\u00e9glise, dont la tour du Pantocrator \u2013 couronn\u00e9e d\u2019une croix latine \u2013 manifestera sa vocation missionnaire et d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9vation spirituelle.<\/p>\n

Le pied du calice, symbole de l\u2019amour infini de la Sainte Trinit\u00e9 embrassant l\u2019univers cr\u00e9\u00e9, sera repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par des lampadaires dispos\u00e9s en forme\u00a0d\u2019ellipse, signe de l\u2019\u0153uvre missionnaire de l\u2019\u00c9glise, de son appel aux fid\u00e8les \u00e0 l\u2019humilit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la repentance, mais aussi de l\u2019invitation des hommes \u00e0 la communion \u00e9ternelle avec Dieu. Ces deux bras lumineux du pied du calice d\u00e9limiteront l\u2019espace o\u00f9, lors des grandes f\u00eates, les fid\u00e8les pourront suivre\u00a0la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de la Divine Liturgie \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de la Cath\u00e9drale \u00bb.<\/p>\n

I Portici e le verande della Cattedrale Nazionale<\/strong><\/h2>\n

L’accesso principale alla Cattedrale Nazionale si fa attraverso un portico monumentale, con arcate, situato sul lato ovest, che, insieme ai portici laterali e a quelli che delineano la spianata, costituisce una parte caratterizzante del complesso architettonico della Cattedrale.<\/p>\n

L’architettura della Cattedrale rappresenta una sintesi tra tradizione e contemporaneit\u00e0, armonizzando elementi architettonici provenienti da diverse aree della Romania (i chiostri moldavi, i portici in stile Br\u00e2ncoveanu e le snelle torri della Transilvania), nonch\u00e9 elementi monumentali di alcune cattedrali occidentali, tenendo conto che, oggi, gran parte della diaspora romena si trova in Occidente. La conformazione planimetrica del complesso rispecchia il carattere liturgico-missionario enfatizzato dal tema di quest’opera architettonica.<\/p>\n

Il portico<\/em> dell’ingresso principale, situato sul lato ovest, colpisce per le sue dimensioni e l’eleganza degli archi. Svolge non solo un ruolo funzionale, proteggendo l’ingresso, ma anche simbolico, accogliendo e preparando i fedeli all’ingresso nello spazio sacro della chiesa. L’esonartece mediano, vestibolo o foyer, \u00e8 concepito come un’estensione del portico sotto forma di un portico chiuso, a simboleggiare la comunione liturgica e l’ospitalit\u00e0 caratteristica della spiritualit\u00e0 romena. Altri tre portici aperti si trovano nelle parti orientale, meridionale e settentrionale della Cattedrale Nazionale.<\/p>\n

I portici<\/em> laterali, settentrionale e meridionale sono strutture annesse, estese in sequenze di colonne, destinate a delimitare lo spazio liturgico esterno, per una superficie edificata di 5.159,20 metri quadrati e un volume di 28.712 metri cubi. Questi edifici delineano il contorno del Santo Altare Estivo della Cattedrale Nazionale. I portici curvi da sud-ovest e nord-ovest, che totalizzano 2.079,60 metri quadrati e un volume di costruzione di 15.285,60 metri cubi, segnano l’ingresso principale al complesso della Cattedrale.<\/p>\n

La tipologia delle colonne nei portici della Cattedrale Nazionale rende omaggio a una delle creazioni architettoniche pi\u00f9 notevoli dell’arte nazionale: lo stile architettonico neo-romeno. Rappresenta una reinterpretazione dell’architettura in stile Br\u00e2ncoveanu, attraverso la lavorazione delle basi delle colonne con ornamenti vegetali, la stilizzazione organica delle pieghe in pietra che drappeggiano le colonne e la delicata struttura della scultura delle volute e delle foglie d’acanto<\/em> del capitello. La radice simbolica delle foglie d’acanto, scelta come motivo decorativo, \u00e8 legata al simbolo della vita eterna, la pianta divenuta nel tempo un elemento fondamentale nella rappresentazione della rinascita e della Resurrezione, non a caso \u00e8 situata alla base e alla sommit\u00e0 delle colonne, come simbolo di sostegno dell’intero edificio.<\/p>\n

I materiali utilizzati nella costruzione dei portici e delle verande, come la pietra e il cemento armato, garantiscono la durevolezza e la monumentalit\u00e0 dell’insieme, progettato per durare nei secoli, testimonianza della fede romena e dell’identit\u00e0 nazionale.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuesta Cattedrale deve essere un simbolo architettonico del momento liturgico supremo, quello dell’Eucaristia, della comunione con Cristo, Uno della Santissima Trinit\u00e0. Per questo \u00e8 necessario rappresentarla attraverso una configurazione che simbolizzi il \u00abCALICE\u00bb. La coppa del calice racchiuder\u00e0 quindi l’edificio della Cattedrale in cui saranno celebrati i Santi Misteri. Al centro della coppa, la chiesa che si eleva, avr\u00e0 come segno della sua vocazione missionaria ed esaltante, la guglia del Pantocratore, coronata dalla croce latina.<\/p>\n

Il piede del calice, che simboleggia l’amore infinito della Santissima Trinit\u00e0 che abbraccia l’intero universo creato, sar\u00e0 rappresentato da candelabri disposti a forma di ellisse, segno dell’opera missionaria della Chiesa, della sua esortazione ai fedeli all’umilt\u00e0 e al pentimento, ma anche della chiamata degli uomini alla comunione eterna con Dio. Questi due bracci luminosi della base del calice delimiteranno il recinto in cui, nelle grandi feste, i fedeli potranno seguire la celebrazione della Santa Liturgia fuori dalla Cattedrale\u201d.<\/p>\n
