Metropolitan Saint Kallinikos of Edessa is widely regarded as a contemporary saint, venerated even during his lifetime as an ascetic hierarch who lived a life of exceptional purity and humility.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At his tonsure into monasticism, he chose the name Kallinikos (from the Greek \u039a\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03af\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2, meaning “beautiful victor”) because he desired to follow the path of the “noble triumphant martyrs.” This choice would later prove prophetic: he endured a serious illness that confined him to his bed, but also brought about the inner purification he had long sought.<\/p>\n

Around the age of 65, Metropolitan Kallinikos was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Prior to undergoing surgery, he spiritually prepared through a life-review confession, which he called a \u201ccleansing bath.\u201d<\/p>\n

He bore the suffering of his final seven months with remarkable serenity, remaining in constant prayer and watchfulness\u2014an essential characteristic of the hesychast monk, as noted by Saint Sophrony of Essex, who visited him during his hospitalisation in London.<\/p>\n

Throughout his life, Saint Kallinikos was closely connected to Mount Athos and its revered elders. He was deeply respected by several contemporary Athonite saints, including Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, Saint Ephraim of Katounakia, and Elder Ephraim of Arizona, who were among his friends. Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos, one of his disciples, described the saint\u2019s passing as a \u201cheavenly liturgy,\u201d a true \u201cAthonite vigil in hesychia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Metropolitan Iakovos of Argolida recounted an incident during an exorcism in which a demon reportedly confessed: \u201cKallinikos burns me! I was cast out of a man by him years ago, and I\u2019ve fought him all his life. I devoured his body with sickness, but now he shines in heaven. His sanctity came from his worn-out wallet.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his repose, Metropolitan Kallinikos\u2019s grave became a pilgrimage site, and numerous testimonies of healing through his intercession have been recorded. One woman said she was healed of chronic headaches that had plagued her for 15 years.<\/p>\n

9 Reflections from the Bed of Suffering<\/h2>\n

During his illness, Saint Kallinikos shared several spiritual insights, marked by deep humility and spiritual clarity:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It doesn’t matter if we are physically blind. What matters is to have the Light of God within and spiritual eyes to see.<\/li>\n
  2. Speak of joy\u2014even in the hospital, in suffering, we must learn to rejoice.<\/li>\n
  3. Upon waking from a coma, he tearfully said: \u201cGod left me alive so that I may repent.\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. I am a dead man. I deceived people with my outward appearance\u2014that’s why God allows me to suffer. The worms will devour me.<\/li>\n
  5. Better bodily death than spiritual death!<\/li>\n
  6. I know very well that this illness is the result of my sins.<\/li>\n
  7. Perhaps through this sickness, God is telling me: \u2018Enough, I no longer need you.\u2019 We must be obedient.<\/li>\n
  8. I don\u2019t care about illness. I would rather be a saint with one leg and one eye.<\/li>\n
  9. For so long I spoke of patience… Now I must live what I have preached.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
