{"id":533505,"date":"2025-07-11T12:07:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T09:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=533505"},"modified":"2025-07-11T12:07:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T09:07:00","slug":"byzantine-basilica-ruins-fethiye-fortress-turkey-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/byzantine-basilica-ruins-fethiye-fortress-turkey-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Byzantine-era basilica ruins discovered near Fethiye Fortress in Southwestern Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ai-optimize-6 ai-optimize-introduction\"><strong>Near the outer walls of the fortified citadel overlooking Fethiye Bay in Mu\u011fla Province, southwestern Turkey, archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a basilica likely dating back to the Middle Byzantine period (9th\u201312th centuries AD).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7\">The discovery was made during archaeological excavations conducted by experts from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, under the scientific supervision of Professor Kadir Pektas, according to Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">The chapel was built adjacent to the fortress\u2019s outer walls, in a location offering an unobstructed view over Fethiye Bay and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Byzantine-era graves have also been discovered, although there is no conclusive evidence that the area functioned as a formal cemetery. Other parts of the site have revealed Ottoman architectural remnants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\">With the archaeological site set to be expanded, researchers expect to gain clearer information regarding the chapel\u2019s exact age and purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">Through the restoration of the chapel and its surrounding areas, the project aims to transform the interior of Fethiye Fortress into a distinct destination that combines a natural landscape with layered historical heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fanadoluajansi%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0fPWngUSx3RvKRHQKzrAx9jtWAq5MTfjEFRc1rdu5vX6mnLG7TMJTqr2DqoMLAqJFl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"690\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">Notably, on Gemile Island, located approximately 15 kilometres from the Fethiye Fortress ruins, Saint Nicholas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/santa-s-tomb-is-found-off-turkey-academics-claim-to-have-found-where-st-nicholas-was-buried-david-keys-reports-1467871.html\">is believed<\/a> to have been buried.
