Last week, Rev. Professor Emanoil B\u0103bu\u0219 delivered a lecture titled \u201cAre You Real or Virtual?\u201d in Bra\u0219ov. According to Lumina Newspaper<\/a>, he spoke to young people about the dangers of the digital environment, which can lead to screen addiction and, over time, the loss of Christian values.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe spend energy for one purpose: the ecstasy of self-importance. The creators of digital technology know human psychology well, especially our \u2018desperate\u2019 need to be recognized,\u201d said Fr. Emanoil B\u0103bu\u0219.<\/p>\n

He discussed the rise of \u201ccognitive capitalism\u201d and \u201caffective capitalism,\u201d which focus on capturing users\u2019 attention and creating monetizable digital profiles. The constant use of smartphones and social media fosters narcissism and makes the real world feel harsher than the virtual one.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2010, \u2018cognitive capitalism\u2019 was inaugurated\u2014tracking internet users\u2019 habits to build profiles that can be monetized. This was followed by \u2018affective capitalism,\u2019 based solely on capturing attention through digital means,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cLikes can make us feel like \u2018kings of the world.\u2019 They give us the illusion of greatness. To receive this \u2018supreme good,\u2019 one must give likes in return. We all place ourselves in front of mirrors that reflect only the positive image of those who look into them. But in reality, such mirrors do not exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fr. B\u0103bu\u0219 warned that internet algorithms can profoundly influence human consciousness. To guard against this, he recommended vigilance, discernment, prayer, and humility.<\/p>\n

Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the internet and computers have become essential to everyday life. However, their influence can be harmful to both the soul and mental health.<\/p>\n

A New Monarchy: The Screen<\/h2>\n

Fr. Emanoil B\u0103bu\u0219 emphasized how digitalization has led to a \u201cmonarchy of the screen,\u201d where images become autonomous products and human relationships\u2014including family life\u2014grow increasingly fragile.<\/p>\n

\u201cGradually, digitalization has revealed a new world\u2014\u2018hyper\u2019 in many ways\u2014where everything changes rapidly. This brings with it hyperconsumption, hyperactivity, and what we now call \u2018a lack of time,\u2019\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne consequence of these changes is the weakening of the human person, who has become a mere consumer. Family relationships have also become more and more fragile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the outcomes, he listed hyperactivity, burnout, and depression. People\u2019s lives have become a \u201chall of mirrors\u201d in which many are willing to lose themselves in digital distractions, neglecting spiritual needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother result is the urgent drive for performance, which generates burnout and depression. Gradually, the real world was absorbed into the \u2018world of screens,\u2019 and the image became an autonomous product, independent of reality and born solely from human creativity,\u201d said Fr. B\u0103bu\u0219.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus, a new monarchy has been established\u2014that of the screen\u2014accompanied by addiction, the constant desire to do something on a screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Exaggerated Self-Image<\/h2>\n

Fr. Prof. Dr. Emanoil B\u0103bu\u0219 warned that screens and social media have become a form of global control, hypnotizing users and creating addiction. What began as platforms for open communication has become a quest for endless validation.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of this constant self-display on virtual networks, we now present our lives as if on billboards\u2014to be seen socially. This causes a mutation of self-esteem and a regression of civilization, as we repeatedly, endlessly seek approval and applause,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough endless exchanges of pleasantries in the digital space, we fall into a flattery that seeks empty praise. This system has subtly brought about the atomization of the human being\u2014what I would call a \u2018fable\u2019 of social relationships and imaginary friends invented by platforms and quickly adopted without critical discernment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning Likes into Spiritual Practice<\/h2>\n

To counter these effects, Fr. B\u0103bu\u0219 recommends turning \u201clikes\u201d into spiritual practices, such as Bible reading and stresses the need for discernment in technology use.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we can\u2019t live without our mobile phones\u2014devices that have been called the \u2018new golden calf.\u2019 Beyond their usefulness for communication, they have also become attractive objects through their function of self-worship, especially with the help of emoticons,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live a connected life and cannot disconnect. But we must not forget that without real deeds, faith is dead. That is why we must free ourselves from the compulsion to give likes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the virtual must never replace reality and that life should be balanced and humbled.<\/p>\n

In closing, Fr. Emanoil B\u0103bu\u0219 advised careful management of one\u2019s thoughts, awareness of the dangers of digital validation addiction, and the importance of disconnecting to maintain the unity of body and soul.<\/p>\n
