{"id":518773,"date":"2025-03-17T16:16:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T14:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=518773"},"modified":"2025-03-17T16:16:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T14:16:03","slug":"35-years-since-the-reactivation-of-the-ukrainian-orthodox-vicariate-in-romania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/35-years-since-the-reactivation-of-the-ukrainian-orthodox-vicariate-in-romania\/","title":{"rendered":"35 years since the reactivation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate in Romania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sunday marked 35 years since the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate&#8217;s re-establishment under the Romanian Patriarchate&#8217;s jurisdiction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following the fall of the atheist communist regime, Orthodox Ukrainians in Romania sought the blessing of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Church to reinstate the Ukrainian Vicariate, which had <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been dissolved<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by the communist authorities in 1952.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The initiative <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was led<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by 15 Ukrainian priests from Maramure\u0219, organized under the Ukrainian Orthodox Deanery based in Ruscova.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the blessing of the Archdiocese of Cluj, a formal request dated January 12, 1990, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> signed by all 15 priests, including Dean Ioan Pi\u021bura, was presented to the Holy Synod on February 12, 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a result, on March 16, 1990, the Holy <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Synod\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Chancellery issued official act No. 1432, reestablishing the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate. The document was signed on behalf of the Patriarchal Locum Tenens by Metropolitan Nicolae of Banat and Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Nifon of Ploie\u0219ti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Vicariate was placed directly under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Patriarchate, as it had been between 1948 and 1952. The act also confirmed the right of Ukrainian parishes within the dioceses of Cluj, Timi\u0219oara, Ia\u0219i, and Oradea to be part of the Vicariate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Preserving Ukrainian Identity<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Today, the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate represents Romania&#8217;s most prominent Ukrainian community<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;J<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ust as Romanian Orthodox parishes and monasteries in the diaspora play a crucial role in preserving the ethnic identity of Romanians abroad, so do the parishes and monasteries of the Vicariate in safeguarding the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ethnolinguistic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> identity of Ukrainians in Romania,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">emphasized General Vicar Father Nicolae Lauruc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This assertion <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is supported<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by data from the most recent census (2021), which shows that in areas where the Vicariate has parishes and monasteries, the percentage of Ukrainians who use Ukrainian as their native language is significantly high: Maramure\u0219 (99%) and Timi\u0219 (88%). In contrast, in other regions where Orthodox Ukrainians are not part of the Vicariate, the percentage of those who declared Ukrainian as their mother tongue is considerably lower: Suceava (73%), Boto\u0219ani (72%), and Tulcea (36%).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cW<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e Are Deeply Grateful to the Romanian Orthodox Churc<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">h\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">n the face of the risk of assimilation, the only Ukrainian entity making an effective effort, with the blessing of the Romanian Patriarchate, is the Vicariate,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">added Father Nicolae Lauruc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> hope that this mission\u2014to cultivate Orthodox faith among our people while preserving their <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ethnolinguistic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> identity\u2014will be valued and carried forward by future generations<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e are profoundly grateful to the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Romanian authorities for their essential support <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in this <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">endeavour<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
