{"id":516679,"date":"2025-02-24T14:12:22","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=516679"},"modified":"2025-02-24T14:12:22","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:12:22","slug":"john-the-stranger-140-burning-bush-jesus-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/john-the-stranger-140-burning-bush-jesus-prayer\/","title":{"rendered":"140 years since the birth of Father John the Stranger, a key figure in the Burning Bush hesychast movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>One hundred forty years have passed since the birth of Father John the Stranger, a priest who introduced the Jesus Prayer to the Bucharest-based <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/tag\/burning-bush-movement\/\">Burning Bush<\/a> hesychast movement, as he had learned it from the elders of Optina Monastery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;J<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ohn the Stranger<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is the name by which Father Ioann Kulygin, born <\/span>on February 24, 1885<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, in Yelets (Oryol), Russia, wanted to be remembered in Romania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Drawn to monastic life from a young age, John joined the renowned Optina Monastery after completing his military service during a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">time of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> great social upheaval in Russia. The monastery had a strong hesychastic tradition, and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Jesus Prayer was recited<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> only after a special rite under the careful guidance of a spiritual father.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From Optina to Cernica<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He was mobilized during World War I and, after 1917, returned to his beloved monastery. However, with Optina soon closed by the Bolshevik regime, John requested to be ordained as a celibate priest and served in the villages of Rostov for ten years between 1919 and 1930.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Between 1930 and 1937, he experienced the horrors of Bolshevik concentration camps. After his release, he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was appointed<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> dean and spiritual father of the Bishop of Rostov. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was his position when he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was found<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Romanian-German troops in 1941. However, the Soviet counteroffensive of 1943 forced him to retreat with his bishop, Archbishop Nicholas of Rostov, alongside the German forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arriving in Transnistria, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was assisted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Metropolitan Visarion Puiu, the head of the Romanian Church Mission.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The Romanian hierarch intervened with the authorities and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Patriarch Nicodim to secure asylum for the Archbishop of Rostov, Father John, and their retinue. They were granted refuge at Cernica Monastery, according to <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Father John the Stranger \u2013 from the Archives of the Burning Bush<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a book published by Gheorghe Vasilescu at Anastasia Publishing House in 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Burning Bush Movement<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On Pentecost Sunday in 1945, Father John the Stranger met Hieroschemamonk Daniil Sandu Tudor, Alexandru Mironescu, and Archimandrite Benedict Ghiu\u0219. The founders of the Burning Bush movement were deeply impressed by how Father John ceaselessly recited the Jesus Prayer and asked for his blessing to practice hesychastic prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He began attending the Burning Bush meetings at Antim Monastery every Sunday, where he joined intellectuals, clergy, students, and many others interested in Orthodox spiritual wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Sofian of Antim later described Father John the Stranger as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a very gentle man, extraordinarily joyfu<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">l&#8221;:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;H<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e would sit by the candle stand, praying constantly. And at the same time, he was very attentive to everything happening in the church. No matter what he was doing, he was always praying<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Return to Russia and His Final Recorded Words<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, Father <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> participation was short-lived, as the Russian occupiers began repatriating their citizens. On October 4, 1946, he was arrested and handed over to Soviet authorities. He <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was accused<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of engaging in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">agitation for an anti-Soviet group, a subversive organization of wealthy and educated individuals opposed to Soviet ideology<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">through his participation in the Burning Bush meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite Patriarch <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nicodim\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> attempts to save him, John the Stranger was tried by a Soviet tribunal and sentenced to 10 years of hard labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a letter from January 1947, the Russian spiritual father instructed that his belongings, especially his liturgical items, be given to Elder Sofian Boghiu or Hieroschemamonk Sandu Tudor to distribute to the poor or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> churches in his memory. He also requested winter clothing from his Romanian friends and prayers for strength:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;B<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">oth the prayers at home and those in church help me, but above all, charity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was the last known correspondence from Father John the Stranger.
