This decision elevated Patriarch Miron Cristea, then Archbishop of Bucharest and Metropolitan of Ungro-Wallachia (Muntenia), as the first Patriarch of Romania.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Romanian Parliament officially recognized the Synodal decision through a special law promulgated by King Ferdinand I, the Unifier, on February 25, 1925. Later, on July 30, 1925, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople formally acknowledged the elevation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to Patriarchal status.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Natural Step in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Church\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> History<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The creation of the Romanian Patriarchate was a logical step following <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Romania\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> independence in 1877, which led to the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Church\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> autocephaly in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1885<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and the Great Union of 1918, which brought together all Romanians from historical territories into a sovereign state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On December 7, 1924, the renowned historian Nicolae Iorga commented in the Universul newspaper: &#8220;We are the only Orthodox nation with only a Primate Metropolitan at the head of an autonomous Church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He also emphasized the historical precedent:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hen the Wallachian Metropolis <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was established<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, its Metropolitan was a Patriarchal Exarch. In the late 16th century, the Metropolitan of Moldavia <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was recognized<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> across Orthodoxy as holding patriarchal dignity. For two centuries, all Eastern Patriarchates were under Romanian rulers<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the same newspaper, Minister of Religious Affairs Al. Lep\u0103datu wrote in December 1924 that the creation of the Romanian Patriarchate was necessary due to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Romanian <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Church\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> numerical and moral superiority over other Orthodox Churches,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Its historic role as the defender and protector of Christians in the East,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Romania\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> political prestige among Orthodox <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">nations<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">which<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> needed to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be reflected<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Church\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> status.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Patriarchs of Romania<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Metropolitan Miron Cristea was enthroned as Romania\u2019s first Patriarch on November 1, 1925, at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, the Romanian Orthodox Church <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was led<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by five previous Patriarchs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Miron Cristea (1925-1939)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nicodim Munteanu (1939-1948)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Justinian Marina (1948-1977)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Justin Moisescu (1977-1986)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teoctist Ar\u0103pa\u0219u (1986-2007)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Centennial Celebrations and Canonization Proclamation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was celebrated on Tuesday with a solemn Divine Liturgy and a Te Deum at the Patriarchal Cathedral, attended by all members of the Holy Synod.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the service, the canonization of 20th-century Romanian confessors and martyrs was officially proclamated.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Romanian Orthodox Church is the largest Orthodox Church within the European Union.
