Their canonization will be publicly proclaimed as part of the program for the Centennial Year of the Romanian Patriarchate\u20142025.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This year, the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrates 140 years since obtaining autocephaly and 100 years since being elevated to the rank of Patriarchate. Therefore, 2025 has been declared the Solemn Year of the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate and the Commemorative Year of the 20th-century Romanian Orthodox confessors and spiritual fathers.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The following have been canonized:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Sofian of St Anthimos Monastery (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">September 16<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Dumitru St\u0103niloae (October 4);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieromartyr Constantine S\u00e2rbu (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">October 23<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Arsenius of Prislop (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">November 28<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Elijah L\u0103c\u0103tu\u0219u (July 22);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Paisius of Sih\u0103stria (December 2);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Cleopas of Sih\u0103stria (December 2);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Dometius the Merciful of R\u00e2me\u021b (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">July 6<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Seraphim the Enduring of S\u00e2mb\u0103ta de Sus (December 20);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hieromartyr Liviu Galaction of Cluj (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">March 8<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieromartyr Gerasimus of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tismana<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">December 26<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieromartyr Bessarion of Lainici (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">November 10<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Callistratus of Timi\u0219eni and Vasiova (May 10);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieromartyr Hilarion Felea (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">September 18<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saint Heraclius of Bessarabia (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">August 3<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieromartyr Alexander of Bessarabia (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">August 8<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The new saints&#8217; general proclamation coincides with the Romanian Patriarchate&#8217;s centennial.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-511692 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1711\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-scaled.jpeg 1711w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-595x890.jpeg 595w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-684x1024.jpeg 684w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-1027x1536.jpeg 1027w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Soborul-sfintilor-romani-icoana-anului-2025-1369x2048.jpeg 1369w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These new saints are represented in the icon &#8220;The Synaxis of All Romanian Saints&#8221;, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/romanian-patriarchate-unveils-new-icon-of-the-assembly-of-romanian-saints-for-centennial-celebration\/\">Representative Icon of the Commemorative Year 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The public proclamation ceremony for these new saints will take place on Tuesday, February 4, at the Patriarchal Cathedral, coinciding with the actual celebration of the 100th anniversary of the elevation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the rank of Patriarchate.<\/p>\n<p>The saints have already been included in the 2025 Orthodox Calendar, and about a month after the general proclamation ceremony, the first day of remembrance for one of them will be marked: Hieromartyr Liviu Galaction of Cluj will be honoured in all churches on March 8.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Local Proclamation Ceremonies<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Local proclamation ceremonies will follow the general proclamation of the sainthood of the 16 confessors in Bucharest in the dioceses where the arguments for their canonization were submitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The local proclamation ceremonies for the five saints from the Metropolis of Muntenia and Dobruja will take place on their feast days, with one exception. On July 13, the local proclamation for the Confessor Priest Elijah L\u0103c\u0103tu\u0219u, whose commemoration day is July 22, will be held at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other local proclamations will be organised on the respective saints&#8217; feast days: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">September 16<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for Saint Sofian of Antim; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">October 4<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for Saint Dumitru St\u0103niloae; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">October 23<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for Saint Constantine S\u00e2rbu; and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">November 28<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for Saint Arsenius of Prislop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The canonization ceremony for Saints Paisius and Cleopas of Sih\u0103stria will take place on August 7 at Sih\u0103stria Monastery in Neam\u021b County, in the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The local proclamation of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the Hieromartyr Liviu Galaction will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">occur<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Cluj-Napoca on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">March 25<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, coinciding with the cathedral&#8217;s patronal feast.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Local proclamations will occur on the saints&#8217; feast days in the Metropolis of Oltenia: November 10 for Saint Bessarion of Lainici and December 26 for Saint Gerasimus of Tismana.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The canonization of Saint Callistratus of Timi\u0219eni and Vasiova from the Metropolis of Banat will be locally proclaimed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at Vasiova Monastery in Cara\u0219-Severin County <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">July 20<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The canonization of the other saint from the metropolis, Saint Hilarion Felea, will be proclaimed on October 5 at the &#8220;Holy Trinity&#8221; Cathedral in Arad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Among the First Saints of the New Millennium<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Four more Romanian Athonite fathers might be added to this list if canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate this year:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Venerable <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/mount-athos-nightingale-nectarios-protopsaltes-is-considered-for-sainthood-patriarch-daniel-announces-at-bucharest-archdiocese-monastic-synaxis\/\">Nectarios the Protopsaltis<\/a>, also known as the Nightingale of Mount Athos;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/metropolitan-synod-in-bucharest-founders-of-romanian-athonite-prodromou-skete-proposed-for-canonization\/\">Venerable Niphon<\/a>, founder of the Romanian Prodromos Skete;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/muntenia-bishops-analyse-texts-for-future-canonisation-of-romanian-athonite-elders-dionisie-ignat-petroniu-tanase\/\">Elder Petroniu T\u0103nase<\/a>, former abbot of the same skete;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hieroschemamonk Dionisius Ignat of Colciu Cell, whose funeral was attended by the current King Charles III of Great Britain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some of these new saints passed away at the beginning of the third millennium AD, making them among the first saints whose earthly life extended into the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Canonization Process in the Romanian Patriarchate<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The canonization process in the Romanian Orthodox Church begins at the initiative of the dioceses where the proposed person ended their earthly life: documents and testimonies are collected and then submitted for evaluation to the Metropolitan Synod. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If canonization <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is approved<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at the metropolitan level, the dossier <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is forwarded<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After approval by the Holy Synod, which consists of all the hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the canonization is publicly proclaimed in a ceremony where believers become acquainted with the decision of the Holy Synod, the saint&#8217;s title, commemoration date, troparion, and icon.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/photo-gallery-icons-of-the-newly-canonized-romanian-saints\/\">Photo gallery: Icons of the newly-canonized Romanian Saints<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Photo: Basilica.ro Files \/ Mircea Florescu<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasilicaNews\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-495171\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif 889w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1024x171.gif 1024w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1536x256.gif 1536w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-2048x341.gif 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church\u00a0approved the canonization of sixteen 20th-century confessors and spiritual fathers.
