According to archaeologists, the painting was created during the Byzantine emperor&#8217;s lifetime.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The Greek Ministry of Culture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culture.gov.gr\/el\/Information\/SitePages\/view.aspx?nID=5198#prettyPhoto\">announced<\/a> that archaeologist Anastasia Koumousi uncovered the portrait of the last Byzantine emperor during restoration work on the church&#8217;s\u00a0paintings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t is the last chronologically preserved portrait of an emperor in monumental Byzantine painting and the only portrait of Constantine Paleologos from his reign (January 6, 1449 \u2013 May 29, 1453),<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/em> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the ministry stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The fresco depicts a mature man wearing imperial regalia: a purple mantle adorned with crowned double-headed eagles, the emblem of the Paleologos dynasty, a jewel-encrusted crown, and a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sceptre<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with a cross at its top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The presence of the double-headed eagle on the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">figure&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> robe and the other insignia allowed researchers to identify the man as an emperor unmistakably<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Historians believe the emperor was depicted in the monastery&#8217;s church because his brothers significantly renovated the monastic establishment during Constantine Paleologos\u2019s reign over the Byzantine Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Photo: www.culture.gov.gr<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasilicaNews\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-495171\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-889x148.gif 889w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1024x171.gif 1024w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-1536x256.gif 1536w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/banner-x-en-2048x341.gif 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A unique portrait of Constantine XI Paleologos, the last Byzantine emperor, was recently discovered in the Church of the Monastery of the Holy Archangels in the Aegion region of Greece.
