{"id":508758,"date":"2024-12-09T13:03:37","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T11:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=508758"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:03:37","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T11:03:37","slug":"bishop-paisies-sunday-sermon-a-call-for-genuine-faith-and-the-danger-of-religious-formalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/bishop-paisies-sunday-sermon-a-call-for-genuine-faith-and-the-danger-of-religious-formalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Paisie&#8217;s Sunday sermon: A call for genuine faith and the danger of religious formalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On the 27th Sunday after Pentecost, His Grace Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Paisie of Sinaia celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the National Cathedral Chapel, emphasizing the importance of living faith authentically while warning against religious formalism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Healing the crippled woman: A symbol of spiritual liberation<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reflecting on the Gospel passage about the healing of the crippled woman, the Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop highlighted both the spiritual and practical meaning of the miracle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">woman\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> suffering, symbolized by her inability to look toward the sky, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">represented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> spiritual disorder: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;S<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">uffering reflects a departure from the perfection of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">God\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> creation, a form of existential disorder, yet our God is a God of order<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christ\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> healings, the bishop noted, permanently extended beyond the physical to offer spiritual renewal through forgiveness: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;C<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hrist the Lord never encountered a suffering person without healing them<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He explained that physical suffering often originates in spiritual affliction: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;A<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lmost all physical suffering described in the Gospels has its roots in the soul, in some personal sin or even an inherited one. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is why <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">today\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Gospel says she had a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u2018<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">spirit of infirmity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pharisees\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Reaction and Religious Legalism<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His Grace also reflected on the reaction of the synagogue leader, who opposed <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jesus\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> healing of the woman on the Sabbath: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he synagogue leader viewed <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christ\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> act of healing as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">labor<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> because it had a tangible result\u2014a sick woman became well. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was a twisted interpretation of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Moses\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Law<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He urged the faithful not to think such legalism <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was confined<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to biblical times: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;F<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ormalism was rampant back then, but we should not believe it exists only in the past. Even today, we are often formalistic and lack genuine spiritual depth<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Religious Formalism Today<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The bishop warned against modern expressions of religious superficiality, including performative piety: <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">oday, some people pray only to be seen by others, even filming themselves praying in private to impress the weak-minded<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He cautioned that religious acts performed without true inner devotion are empty:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;F<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">asting as a diet, avoiding work on holy days, attending church out of habit, seeking the front seats, making excessive signs of the cross, or kissing all the icons will not bring salvation without humility and heartfelt spiritual life<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Call for Authenticity and Humility<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In closing, His Grace Bishop Paisie of Sinaia encouraged the congregation to cultivate deep, sincere faith and avoid superficial religious gestures: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;L<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">et us strive not to miss our encounter with Christ.
