On Saturday, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel attended a reception at Cotroceni Palace hosted by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on the occasion of Romania’s National Day. The event gathered representatives of state institutions, religious denominations, civil society, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Bucharest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow is Romania\u2019s National Day, and I urge you to look back with gratitude at the sacrifices and struggles for our unity and sovereignty and forward to the future, which we must build with wisdom and an awareness that today\u2019s decisions will significantly influence the lives of future generations and the destiny of our country,\u201d said<\/a> President Klaus Iohannis.<\/p>\n

\u201cRomania has a tumultuous history, marked by moments of glory but also dramatic trials. On December 1, 1918, our forebears fulfilled their dream of a united nation, achieving the Great Union in Alba Iulia,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince then, we have endured wars, dictatorship, revolution, and severe health and economic crises. Through unity and solidarity, we have always managed to overcome these challenges, adapt, and rise stronger than before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year, we also mark 35 years since the December 1989 Revolution, when, thanks to the courage of the heroes of those days, the communist dictatorship ended, and Romania began to experience the long-desired freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Romania of the Great Union, modern Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, did not materialize in a single day or through the efforts and sacrifices of one generation alone, nor through the work of a single government. It was the result of the commitment, struggle, and labour of successive generations inspired by the humanist and democratic vision of our elites,\u201d President Iohannis added.<\/p>\n

Romania celebrates its National Day on December 1. It was established after the fall of communism to honour those who gave their lives to achieve the Great Union of 1918, creating a state that united Romanians from all its historical provinces.<\/p>\n
