{"id":506994,"date":"2024-11-28T16:29:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T14:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=506994"},"modified":"2024-11-28T16:29:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T14:29:51","slug":"patriarch-daniel-fasting-alone-is-not-enough-without-acts-of-mercy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/patriarch-daniel-fasting-alone-is-not-enough-without-acts-of-mercy\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriarch Daniel: Fasting alone is not enough without acts of mercy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;It is not enough to abstain from harming others; one must also do much good to achieve salvation,&#8221; Patriarch Daniel reminded the faithful last Sunday during his sermon at the Chapel of St. George the Great Martyr in the Patriarchal Residence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reflecting on the Gospel reading about <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christ\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> dialogue with a rich young ruler (Luke 18:18\u201327), Patriarch Daniel emphasized,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Today\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Gospel warns us that it is not sufficient to fast often, pray diligently, or abstain from sin and indulgences if we are not also merciful<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mercy as a Reflection of God<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why is mercy so crucial?<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Because merciful love or showing kindness to those in need is the beginning of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">man\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> resemblance to the Merciful God,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">explained the Patriarch.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">God desires not only our gratitude towards Him but also our mercy toward those in need<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriarch contrasted the rich fool, preoccupied with earthly pleasures and indifferent to spiritual matters, with the rich man in this Gospel passage, who was a believer, devout, moral, and concerned with the salvation of his soul. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, even this faithful man <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was reminded<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Christ that his <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">deeds, though<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> good<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;J<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">esus Christ uncovered a hidden spiritual illness in the rich ruler: greed for wealth. He was too attached to his earthly possessions,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Patriarch explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Call to Spiritual Freedom<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When Christ urged the young man to free himself from the bondage of greed by giving up his wealth to the poor, the ruler became sorrowful.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He was saddened because he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was presented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with a material loss in exchange for a spiritual gain he could not yet understand,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">observed the Patriarch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a surprising turn, Jesus did not insist further.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Lord left him in his sadness, as this sorrow marked the beginning of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ruler\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> internal struggle,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said the Patriarch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;J<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">esus proposes but does not impose; He invites, but does not compel; He advises, but does not pressure. He offers immediate guidance but patiently waits for a free response, foreseeing a slow and eventual conversion aided by God<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Journey of Transformation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to tradition, the rich ruler eventually overcame his attachment to wealth after a prolonged spiritual struggle and with <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">God\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> help.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He sold his possessions, distributed the proceeds to the poor, became a disciple of Christ, and later served as a bishop in Asia Minor,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Patriarch recounted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriarch highlighted that many wealthy individuals throughout history have followed <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christ\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> counsel to transform their earthly riches into heavenly treasures.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many became monks, benefactors, or founders of churches and social institutions, using their wealth to support the work of the Church<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Call to Mercy During Advent<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Patriarch Daniel concluded with a prayer, asking God to help the faithful during this Nativity Fast.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with prayer, fasting, confession, and more frequent Communion, may we also practice mercy, striving to resemble the Merciful God<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_506166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-506166\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-506166 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DSC_7037-890x636.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DSC_7037-890x636.jpg 890w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DSC_7037-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DSC_7037-1536x1097.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DSC_7037.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 440px, (max-width: 768px) 354px, 890px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-506166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patriarch Daniel preaching at the chapel of St George inside the patriarchal residence, Nov. 24, 2024.
