The canonization of Saint Macarius Protopsaltes was proclaimed on Sunday following the Divine Liturgy celebrated for the Feast of Saint Demetrius the New. His Grace Varlaam of Ploie\u0219ti, Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop and Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, read the Synodal Tomos of Canonization. <\/strong><\/p>\n

After the proclamation, the troparion of Saint Macarius Protopsaltes <\/span>was chanted<\/span>, and his icon <\/span>was presented<\/span> to the faithful. The canonization <\/span>was decided<\/a><\/span> by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2023, which was designated the Commemorative Year of Hymnographers and Church Chanters. The <\/span>saint\u2019s<\/span> feast day will be celebrated annually on August 31.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biography: Saint Macarius Protopsaltes<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hieromonk Macarius lived from 1763 to 1836. In the early 19th century, he was ordained a hieromonk for the Metropolitan Cathedral of Bucharest and appointed <\/span>as<\/span> a preacher at the Royal Court. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the instruction of Metropolitan Dionisie Lupu, he <\/span>embarked on translating<\/span> church hymns from Greek into Romanian. After extensive efforts, he <\/span>succeeded in printing<\/span> the first Romanian-language church music books in Vienna in 1822 and 1823: Theoreticon, Anastasimatarion, and Irmologion.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second volume of the Anthology of Byzantine Hymns in Romanian was later published in Bucharest<\/span>, containing<\/span> the matins hymns for the liturgical year.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1829, following <\/span>the exile of<\/span> Saint Gregory the Teacher from his metropolitan see in Wallachia, Venerable Macarius Protopsaltes, a close associate of the saint, withdrew to Ia\u0219i.<\/span> There,<\/span> Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi of Moldavia asked him to establish a Byzantine music school <\/span>modelled<\/span> after the one in Bucharest.<\/span><\/p>\n

During this period, he resided at Neam\u021b Monastery, where he founded a music school. In 1833, he returned to Wallachia when Saint Gregory <\/span>was reinstated<\/span> to the metropolitan throne. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the <\/span>metropolitan\u2019s<\/span> encouragement, Macarius supervised <\/span>printing<\/span> The<\/span> Lives of the Saints<\/span><\/em> at C\u0103ld\u0103ru\u0219ani Monastery. During this time, he founded church music schools for monks at the C\u0103ld\u0103ru\u0219ani and \u021aig\u0103ne\u0219ti monasteries. At C\u0103ld\u0103ru\u0219ani, he met the future Elder Nectarius Protopsaltes, who would later reside at the Romanian Skete Prodromos on Mount Athos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Venerable Macarius Protopsaltes encouraged young Nectarius to pursue Byzantine chanting, and today, Nectarius is on the Ecumenical <\/span>Patriarchate’s<\/span> canonization list<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Venerable Macarius Protopsaltes passed away at Vifor\u00e2ta Monastery, where his sister, Mother Justina, <\/span>who was<\/span> also the abbess, cared for him in his final days. Saint Macarius entered into eternal rest on August 30, 1836.<\/span><\/p>\n
