{"id":496143,"date":"2024-09-18T12:10:21","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T09:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=496143"},"modified":"2024-09-18T12:10:21","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T09:10:21","slug":"dialogue-between-orthodox-church-and-oriental-churches-resumes-after-31-years-in-cairo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/dialogue-between-orthodox-church-and-oriental-churches-resumes-after-31-years-in-cairo\/","title":{"rendered":"Dialogue between Orthodox Church and Oriental Churches resumes after 31 years in Cairo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches resumed in Cairo this week after a 31-year hiatus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The joint dialogue commission&#8217;s meetings took place on September 16-17 at the Monastery of Abba Bishoy in Cairo, a monastic settlement belonging to the Coptic Church. His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate co-chaired the meetings on behalf of the Orthodox Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The meetings aimed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to present how the documents issued during the preliminary meetings in 1964, 1971, and the official meetings in 1985 and 1993 were and are perceived, as well as to present reports on identifying viable perspectives to contribute to the development and consolidation of inter-Christian relations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Romanian Patriarchate delegation consisted of His Grace Bishop Benedict of Bistri\u021ba, assistant bishop of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac, and Cluj, and Fr. Viorel Ioni\u021b\u0103, honorary patriarchal counsellor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The actual work began with the presentation of a report from each delegation on the current state of the dialogue, especially from a practical perspective, in the community represented,&#8221; said His Grace Bishop Benedict of Bistri\u021ba for Trinitas TV. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;On the margins of these reports, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certain clarifications were requested,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certain elements were <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">added<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0so that the dialogue could move forward and directions could <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be identified<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> through which not only to update what has happened over more than 60 years of dialogue but also to contribute to a fruitful future of this necessary rapprochement in a divided world.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the second day of the meeting, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the contemporary world&#8217;s main ethical problems<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0were discussed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">shared<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> strategies for solving them were identified<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We hope that the meeting will be a plus not only theologically but also practically, in the sense of the need to have a common voice regarding contemporary realities in all aspects that they can propose to us,&#8221; added the hierarch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also, at the end of the working sessions, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec-patr.org\/meeting-between-representatives-of-the-orthodox-church-and-the-oriental-orthodox-churches-communique\/\">joint declaration<\/a> was published regarding the current state of the dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Purpose of the Meetings<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In an interview for the newspaper Lumina, Fr. Viorel Ioni\u021b\u0103, honorary patriarchal counsellor, discussed the history of the dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Ancient Oriental Churches and the work of the dialogue commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The official theological dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Ancient Oriental Churches was prepared by holding four unofficial meetings between 1964 and 1971, followed by four official meetings between 1985 and 1993.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;On behalf of the Romanian Orthodox Church, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">how<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the results of this dialogue were received at the level of the Holy Synod of our Church will be presented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first, then how the respective results <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were made<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> known in extensive circles within this Church through studies and books published by various Romanian theologians,&#8221; added Fr. Professor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also, Fr. Viorel Ioni\u021b\u0103 mentioned that St Dumitru St\u0103niloae participated in 1971 in a meeting to evaluate the dialogue in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
