V\u0103ratec Monastery in Neam\u021b County, Romania, will rebuild two monastic houses destroyed by a devastating fire<\/a> late last month.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fire is believed to have started after an electrical short circuit in a sewing machine, said the Neam\u021b County Emergency Response Unit<\/a> officials.<\/p>\n

In a short time, most likely due to the wind, the flames spread and the damage was very high. The flames consumed the two dwellings with a total area of about 380 square meters and the goods inside.<\/p>\n

Firefighters battled the blaze for four hours: “The intervention was a lengthy one, given the affected area and the large amount of combustible material,” the Neam\u021b fire brigade announced on Facebook.<\/p>\n

V\u0103ratec Monastery is linked to the name of B\u0103la\u0219a Herescu (1757-1842), a religious sister at the Topoli\u021ba Hermitage with the name of Sister Olimpiada. Advised by Abbot Paisie Velichkovsky of the Neam\u021b Monastery, she founded a small hermitage in the V\u0103ratec clearing some time between 1781 and 1785.<\/p>\n
