{"id":477982,"date":"2024-05-03T14:39:43","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T11:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=477982"},"modified":"2024-05-03T14:40:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T11:40:05","slug":"raise-the-cross-not-the-sword-bishop-sebastian-urges-prayer-for-those-in-conflicts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/raise-the-cross-not-the-sword-bishop-sebastian-urges-prayer-for-those-in-conflicts\/","title":{"rendered":"Raise the Cross, not the sword: Bishop Sebastian urges prayer for those in conflicts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In his pastoral letter for Holy Pascha, His Grace Bishop Sebastian of Slatina and Romanati advised the faithful to reject partisanship in the context of the current wars and to pray for all parties involved: \u201cLet us raise the Cross instead of the sword and seek peace, not war; that peace that the Lord gave to His disciples after His Resurrection, as a provision of the Universal Resurrection!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn this world, increasingly transformed into a jungle of greed and death, our position, as Christians, cannot be other than that of the Church, which rejects any form of aggression and prays unceasingly for peace,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the bishop conveyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen Christ commanded his disciples to conquer all the nations, \u201cbaptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit&#8230;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Mt. 28: 19), he did not ask them to do this with the sword or through who knows what military strategies, but through the Cross.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Only the \u201cunseen warfare<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is blessed by the Church<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLet us be clear! In the Church, only one kind of war\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is blessed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0&#8211; the unseen warfare or that of the Cross\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">-,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0so that only \u201cthose who have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Gal. 5:24)\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are crowned<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with the laurels of victory,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the Bishop of Slatina and the Romanati underlined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhy is this warfare with ourselves so necessary? Because any passion that makes its nest in our heart is a herald of the killing war. Every passion is a murderous angel.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The seven deadly sins are so called not only because they kill our soul but also because, as soon as the opportunity arises, they pounce on our neighbour and kill him. It is not enough to run away from evil and war;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0we must also seek inner peace<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0David the prophet\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">says,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34: 13),<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the hierarch added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Too many of us<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, however<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, ignoring the holy doctrine and forgetting the war with ourselves, have thrown ourselves into battle against one another.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Instead of fighting the evil in ourselves, we were each quick to see the evil in the other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The heroism of service shown by Christ is opposed to the logic of\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tyranny<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe word of the Lord: The greatest among you will be your servant (Mt. 23: 11<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">),<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0however, overturns any logic of tyranny,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the bishop continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHis warning\u2014\u201cfor all who draw the sword will die by the sword\u201d (Mt. 26: 52)\u2014still resonates today as a curse for all those who want wars, for all despots and insatiable politicians of the world, because, in divine logic, power does not mean aggression<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but inner strength capable of leading, through humility, to sacrifice and supreme sacrifice, according to the model of the Lord\u2019s Sacrifice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We must understand that, in God\u2019s eyes, heroes are not those who die for the whims of disbelieved despots, temporarily perched at the top of secular power, but those who give their lives in the fight for eternity. That man\u2019s greatest enemy is neither the neighbour,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">nor the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0stranger, nor even his aggressor of any kind, but man himself,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Bishop Sebastian explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The pastoral letter of the Bishop of Slatina and Romanati ended with a new call to the faithful to put away the weapons of the darkness of this age and put on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">armour of light<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Romans 13:12).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLet us spend the celebration of the Lord\u2019s Resurrection in peace, as a foretaste of our <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">own<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0resurrection, enjoying what is left good and beautiful in the world and in our being and nourishing our souls with His boundless love for us, love on which He paid for with His death on the Cross,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span
