{"id":407704,"date":"2022-12-16T17:04:13","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T15:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=407704"},"modified":"2022-12-16T17:04:13","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T15:04:13","slug":"probable-first-cell-of-st-paisius-velichkovsky-discovered-on-holy-mount-athos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/probable-first-cell-of-st-paisius-velichkovsky-discovered-on-holy-mount-athos\/","title":{"rendered":"Probable first cell of St. Paisius Velichkovsky discovered on Holy Mount Athos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A small stone hut believed to be the first monastic habitation of St. Paisius Velichkovsky during his time on the Holy Mount Athos was recently discovered by a group of monks who were cutting back the thickets of the monastery forest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The monks invited Sergei Shumilo, Director of the International Institute of the Athonite Legacy, to assess their discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">St. Paisius rebuilt the hut with his hands and lived there in complete seclusion from 1746 to 1754, Shumilo reports in an article on the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/afon.org.ua\/uk\/novini\/na-afoni-znajdeno-unikalnu-dukhovno-istorichnu-pam-yatku-xviii-st-pov-yazanu-z-ukrajinoyu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Institute\u2019s website<\/span><\/a>, cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/orthochristian.com\/149861.html\">Orthodox Christianity<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. There, he took monastic vows, gathered his first disciples, and began his literary and translation activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the cell, known as Kalyva Kipari, which was once used as housing for the monastery gardener, was long considered lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAccording to many signs and descriptions, it seems that this is probably the very dwelling of St. Paisius (Velichkovsky),\u201d said Shumilo. \u201cHowever, this requires additional research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of the saint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In honour of the anniversary, the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate of Romania\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">chose him as its patron saint<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0this year.
