Thus, around this great feast, saints known and unknown, from all times and places, are honored. The celebration of the Sundays following Pentecost was gradually established by the Church.

First, we honor the Sunday of All Saints, when we celebrate all known and unknown saints. On the second Sunday after Pentecost, the Orthodox Churches honor their national saints; in our Church, the Romanian Saints are celebrated. On the third Sunday after Pentecost, the Romanian Orthodox Church has appointed the commemoration of the Athonite Saints, thereby highlighting the spiritual bond that our people have with the Holy Mountain of Athos.

The contributions of Romanian rulers and noblemen to the support of the Athonite monasteries from the 14th to the 19th centuries were of exceptional importance. The presence of Romanian monks on the Athonite peninsula has been continuous from the 14th century to the present day, and many Romanian ascetics attained great holiness. Therefore, on this Sunday we honor all the saints who struggled spiritually on Mount Athos, including some of Romanian descent.

Today, with special joy, we highly honor the Mother of God, the Lady of the Mountain and Abbess of all the Athonite monasteries, who chose and requested this Mountain as her inheritance from her Son, so that through her prayers she might protect the zealous monks.

We then honor, as is fitting, the founders of monastic life on Mount Athos: Saint Peter the Athonite (650–734), the first hermit of the Mountain, who, living in poverty, overcame countless demonic temptations through fasting and prayer; and Saint Athanasius the Athonite (920–1003), founder of the Great Lavra and of cenobitic monastic life on Mount Athos.

Today we celebrate the choir of holy hierarchs who lived angelic lives in the Garden of the Mother of God and enlightened the faithful through their teachings. We honor Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessaloniki (1296–1359), pillar of Orthodoxy, great hesychast ascetic, theologian of the Uncreated Light, and conqueror of the heresies of Barlaam and Akindynos; Saint Philotheos Kokkinos, Patriarch of Constantinople (1300–1379), disciple of Saint Gregory Palamas, defender of Orthodoxy and hesychast prayer; Saint Kallistos I, Patriarch of Constantinople (†1363), disciple of Saint Gregory of Sinai and Philokalic writer; Saint Gerasimos Palladas, Patriarch of Alexandria (1645–1714), who lived for a time in Wallachia and later retired to Vatopedi Monastery; Saint Macarius Notaras, Metropolitan of Corinth (1731–1805), teacher of the Philokalia and hesychast ascetic who collaborated with Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite in publishing spiritually beneficial books; Saint Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople (1745–1821), who was exiled to Mount Athos and was later hanged by the Ottomans at the gate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the night of Pascha, April 10, 1821; and many other holy hierarchs, known and unknown, who labored in the Athonite Peninsula.

Today we also praise the holy monastic elders who served with zeal and devotion, guiding monks and faithful Christians to Christ. Thus we celebrate Saint Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia (1906–1991), whom God glorified with the gifts of prophecy and wonderworking because of his profound humility; Saint Sophrony of Essex (1896–1993), disciple of Saint Silouan the Athonite, who was granted the vision of the Divine Light; Saint Ephraim of Katounakia (1912–1998), who sanctified his life through patience; together with many other hieromonks who attained perfection in the Garden of the Mother of God.

We also honor the choir of Athonite saints who struggled in monasteries, deserts, caves, and on the islands of the sea. We commemorate Saint Paul of Xeropotamou (10th century), founder of the Monasteries of Xeropotamou and Saint Paul; Saint Simeon the Myrrh-Gusher (13th century), founder of Simonopetra Monastery; Saint John Koukouzelis (1280–1330), who sang to the Most Holy Mother of God with a divinely inspired voice and received a reward from her; Saint Gregory of Sinai (1270–1346), great teacher of prayer and seer of the Uncreated Light; Saint Maximus Kavsokalyvites (1280–1365), a great hesychast who practiced the virtue of hiddenness by burning his huts to conceal his spiritual achievements; Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite (1749–1809), ardent man of prayer and publisher of the Philokalia in Venice in 1782; Saint Silouan the Athonite (1866–1938), intercessor for the whole world and beholder of the Divine Light; Saint Joseph the Hesychast (1897–1959), who revitalized Athonite monastic life through his disciples and became the spiritual father of many monastic communities; Saint Paisios the Athonite (1924–1994), who shone through both word and deed as a guide for monks and laypeople at the end of the twentieth century; and many other venerable fathers, known and unknown.

Throughout history, many Romanian monks chose to live on Mount Athos. Some became renowned for the spiritual gifts bestowed upon them by God as they lived lives of strict asceticism, fasting, and prayer. Some spent only part of their lives on the Holy Mountain before returning to Romania, bringing Athonite traditions into Romanian monasteries. Others remained there until the end of their lives, becoming examples of humility and love.

Today we also honor Romanian hierarchs who labored spiritually on Mount Athos and guided countless souls to God through their teachings: Saint Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople (†1508); Saint Joseph the New of Partoș, Metropolitan of Banat (1568–1656); Saint Gregory the Teacher, Metropolitan of Wallachia (1765–1834); and Saint Calinic of Cernica, Archbishop of Râmnic (1787–1868).

We also offer hymns of praise to Romanian saints who shone through their life on the Holy Mountain: Saint Nicodemus the Sanctified of Tismana (1320–1406); Saint Basil of Poiana Mărului (1692–1767); Saint Paisius of Neamț (1722–1794), renewer of hesychastic life throughout Orthodoxy; Saint George of Cernica and Căldărușani (1730–1806); and Saint Macarius the Protopsaltis (1763–1836), who was formed at Pantocrator Monastery and sang sweetly to the Most Pure Mother of God.

We further praise Saint Niphon of Prodromou (1799–1899), first founder and abbot of the Romanian Skete of Prodromou; Saint Nectarios Protopsaltis, also called “the Wallachian” (1804–1899), known as “the nightingale of the Holy Mountain”; Saint Anthimos of Calapodești (1816–1882); Saint Irodion of Lainici (1821–1900); Saint Arsenie of Prislop (1910–1989); Saint Seraphim of Sâmbăta de Sus (1912–1990); Saint Dionysios of Colciu (1909–2004), great spiritual father and teacher of the Jesus Prayer; Saint Petroniu (Tănase) of Prodromou (1916–2011), restorer of the Romanian skete and discreet missionary through his spiritual letters; and many other saints, known and unknown.

Through their holy prayers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Troparion – Tone 1

Let us honor with praises and psalms the Fathers of Athos, as angels in the flesh, confessors and hermits, hierarchs and martyrs, following their virtues. He was the son of a pagan senator, but his mother was a Christian. After the death of her husband the mother of Saint Julian moved to Tarsus, where her son was baptized and raised in Christian piety.

When Julian reached the age of 18, persecution against Christians began under the emperor Diocletian (284-305). Among those arrested was Saint Julian. They brought him before the governor Marcian for trial, and for a long time they urged him to renounce Christ.

Neither tortures nor threats, nor promises of gifts and honours could convince the pious youth to offer pagan sacrifice and deny Christ. The holy confessor remained steadfast in his firm faith.

For a whole year, they led the martyr through the cities of Cilicia, everywhere subjecting him to interrogation and torture, after which they threw him in prison. Saint Julian’s mother followed after her son and prayed that the Lord would strengthen him.

In the city of Aegea, she besought the governor to permit her to visit the prison, ostensibly to persuade her son to offer sacrifice to idols. She spent three days in prison with Saint Julian, exhorting him to be strong until the end.

Saint Julian was again brought to stand before the governor. Thinking that the mother had persuaded her son to submit to the imperial decree, the governor began to praise her prudence. But suddenly she boldly confessed Jesus Christ and even more fearlessly and boldly denounced polytheism.

The governor then gave orders to cut off her feet, since she had accompanied her son from Tarsus. They tied the Martyr Julian into a sack, filled with sand and poisonous snakes, and threw it into the sea.

The body of the sufferer was carried by the waves to the shores of Alexandria, and with reverence was buried by a certain pious Christian. The martyr’s death occurred in about the year 305.

Afterwards, his relics were transferred to Antioch. Saint John Chrysostom honoured the holy Martyr Julian with an encomium.

Troparion — Tone 4

Your holy martyr Julian, O Lord, / through his suffering has received an incorruptible crown from You, our God. / For having Your strength, he laid low his adversaries, / and shattered the powerless boldness of demons. / Through his intercessions save our souls!

Holy Martyr Aphrodisios of Cilicia

Saint Aphrodisios was from the land of Cilicia, who was taught to revere Christ from his ancestors. Arrested as a Christian, he was brought before the governor Dionysios, and confessed Christ as the true God.

For this he was burned with heated iron on his back, then put in a cauldron full of boiling lead. Afterward he was suspended upside down. Because he was kept unharmed by divine grace, a lion appeared in the theater which was set loose upon the Saint, that harmed him in no way, but instead spoke with him in a human voice, rebuking the harshness of the Greeks. Because of this miracle, many came to believe in Christ, whom they boldly confessed, for which reason they were beheaded, and thus ascended victoriously into the heavens.

When the tyrant saw this, he ordered for a rock to be split, for the Saint to be placed in the middle, and for the other half of the rock to be put on top of him. It took fifty-five soldiers to carry this out. Thus the Saint immediately delivered his soul into the hands of God, and received from Him the crown of martyrdom.

Orthodox Calendar, June 21 Sunday of the Athonite Saints On the third Sunday after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, we celebrate the commemoration of all the Venerable Fathers who shone forth through asceticism on the Holy Mountain of Athos.
