Therefore, with great zeal she went to church, labored in the house of the Lord, sang in the choir, and read from the holy books, learning prayer, which would accompany her throughout her life.

After marrying a right-believing man, Gheorghe Gobjilă, the son of a priest, they lived their family life wisely, in peace and joy, keeping the commandments of God. They were blessed with a son, Vladislav-Slavcic, whom they raised in the fear of God.

After the annexation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union, the Bolshevik persecution fell heavily upon intellectuals and prosperous families. In 1941 she was arrested together with her husband and sent into the dreadful exile of Siberia, where she endured years of imprisonment and forced labor, hunger, cold, mockery, and the unjust death of her beloved husband, Gheorghe.

While in prison, the Lord Jesus Christ crucified appeared to her in a dream, saying: “Do you see how I also suffer unjustly, though innocent?” She carried this vision in her soul throughout her life as a gift from God, for it brought her great peace, strength, and consolation amid the trials she endured. In patience she surpassed many; she served the sick, secretly baptized infants, comforted the hopeless and imprisoned, and prayed unceasingly in the midst of suffering.

With humility she washed floors in hospitals and labored in factories and fields, yet in secret she also worked in the vineyard of the Lord. Although she suffered greatly in body, spiritually she found rest through the words she held in her heart: “Everything is in the hands of God. From death He makes life, and vice versa.” She lived many years alongside imprisoned nuns and priests, where services were celebrated secretly, with tears and inner fervor.

In 1949 she was released, but was forced to remain in Siberia, in a remote village, where she cared for her mother and lived in toil and prayer until her mother’s death. Then, through the providence of the Lord, after fifteen years of suffering in Siberia, in 1957 she managed to come to Romania, to Iași, where she found a great protectress and helper in Saint Paraskeva, whom she honored with deep devotion alongside the Most Holy Mother of God.

No sooner had she arrived in the country, escaping with God’s help the long and bitter persecution, than she was struck by another sword piercing her heart, all the more painful because it came through the hand of her own son. He told her that he would give her three days to choose between confessing her faith and remaining in his house. But immediately the Saint replied: “Do not give me three days to choose God. I always have God. I renounce everything, but I will never renounce God! I do not need three days to think; I tell you now: if I cannot have both God and you, then I choose God.”

Her way of life resembled that of a nun: every day, from dawn until evening, she was at the Metropolitan Cathedral, wiping icons, cleaning, and striving humbly through fasting, tearful prayer, and almsgiving. At night, in the homes of believers where she was hosted, she read the Midnight Office, psalms, and akathists.

To those who judged her for the humble life she chose out of love for Christ, she answered serenely: “I am not ashamed to wash the feet of Christ the Savior.” Many overlooked her, but the more faithful recognized in her a holy woman, hidden from the eyes of the world but known to God.

One night she dreamed of Saint Paraskeva, who told her: “Do not worry, I will be with you.” Another time, distressed that Irina, her son’s daughter, would remain unbaptized, she dreamed of Saint Paraskeva saying: “Blandina, do not worry about your granddaughter. She will be baptized and protected by me. Only place a candle at my head every day for her, so that she may receive the light of Christ.”

Indeed, after one month her granddaughter was baptized through another unexpected miracle. On another occasion, Saint Paraskeva again appeared to her in a dream and commanded her to write down all the miracles she had performed; Blandina recorded twenty-nine miracles wrought by the Saint for various people, especially young people who prayed with faith.

Once, the daughter of a doctor from Iași failed an examination and was threatened with repeating the year. Her mother came to Blandina and told her of her sorrow. Blandina prayed to Saint Paraskeva with tears: “You know, Saint Paraskeva, how much this doctor helped me; please help her too, for I cannot.” That night she dreamed of Saint Paraskeva, who said to her: “I am sending you your son, who is a friend of the girl’s professor, so that he may speak with him and arrange another examination, and I will help her during it.” Two days later, Vladislav arrived unexpectedly from Bucharest, arranged everything, and the girl passed the exam.

Also in Arad, at her uncle’s home, she experienced a miracle through Saint Dimitrie Basarabov. One day her left hand began to hurt so badly that she could not work at all. She told no one, but constantly prayed to the Mother of God to heal her hand so she could continue helping the elderly couple and not eat bread in vain. One night she felt someone touching her painful hand. Frightened, she asked who it was and received the answer: “I am Saint Dimitrie from Bucharest.” From that moment her hand never hurt again. Blandina greatly venerated Saint Dimitrie Basarabov.

In 1967 the Saint became ill with cancer, but within two months she recovered. In December 1969 she became ill again. She desired to depart to eternal life between Pascha and the Ascension of the Lord, so that the hymn “Christ is Risen!” would be sung for her. God fulfilled this desire. She reposed in the Lord on May 24, 1971, before the Feast of the Ascension.

At her funeral, the church was filled with priests and people from every social class who had known her love and warmth of soul and who had called her “Mother Blandina.” Her son, seeing the multitude who came to mourn her, was overcome with sorrow and repentance, saying with tears: “I had a holy mother.”

The example of her life is a spiritual treasure for all who seek God in humility, silence, suffering, and hidden service. She was not a teacher only by word, but above all by the way she lived. Although she did not suffer bodily martyrdom, she was a martyr in spirit, and though she was never tonsured as a nun, she lived as one.

Therefore, today we commemorate Mother Blandina, the tireless laborer of Christ, with faith and reverence, as one who proved to be an example of sacrifice and confession, a light in the darkness of those times, and gentleness amid the storm of persecution.

Through her holy prayers, O Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Troparion — Tone 3

Yout whole life, O blessed Blandina, was filled with tribulations, sufferings and persecution; for the path to your heavenly dwelling passed through prisons, torments and poverty. From her youth Saint Martha (July 4) prepared herself for a life of virginity and longed for monasticism, but her parents insisted that she marry John.

After ardent prayer in a church dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner, the future nun was directed in a vision to submit to the will of her parents and enter into marriage.

As a married woman, Saint Martha strove to please God and her husband in everything. She often prayed for a baby and promised to dedicate him to the service of God.

Saint John the Forerunner revealed to Martha that she would have a son who would serve God. When the infant was born, he was named Simeon and baptized at two years of age.

When Simeon was six years old, an earthquake occurred in the city of Antioch, in which his father perished. Simeon was in church at the time of the earthquake. Leaving the church, he became lost and spent seven days sheltered by a pious woman. Saint John the Baptist again appeared to Saint Martha, and indicated where to find the lost boy.

The saint’s mother found her lost son, and moved to the outskirts of Antioch after the earthquake. Already during his childhood the Lord Jesus Christ appeared several times to Saint Simeon, foretelling his future exploits and the reward for them.

The six-year-old child Simeon went into the wilderness, where he lived in complete isolation. During this time a light-bearing angel guarded and fed him. Finally, he arrived at a monastery, headed by the igumen Abba John, who lived in asceticism upon a pillar. He accepted the boy with love.

After a time, Saint Simeon asked the Elder John to permit him also to struggle upon a pillar. A new pillar was raised by the brethren of the monastery with the blessing of the igumen, near his pillar. Having completed the initiation of the seven-year-old boy into monasticism, Abba John placed him upon this pillar.

The young ascetic, strengthened by the Lord, quickly grew spiritually, in his efforts surpassing even his experienced instructor. For his efforts, Saint Simeon received from God the gift of healing.

The fame of the young monk’s deeds began to spread beyond the bounds of the monastery. Monks and laypeople began to come to him from various places, desiring to hear his counsel and receive healing from their infirmities. The humble ascetic continued to pursue asceticism with instructions from his spiritual mentor Abba John.

When he was eleven, Simeon decided to pursue asceticism upon a higher pillar, the top of which was forty feet from the ground. The bishops of Antioch and Seleukia came to the place of the monk’s endeavors, and ordained him as a deacon. Then they permitted him to ascend the new pillar, on which Saint Simeon labored for eight years.

Saint Simeon prayed ardently for the Holy Spirit to descend upon him, and the holy prayer of the ascetic was heard. The Holy Spirit came upon him in the form of a blazing light, filling the ascetic with divine wisdom. Along with oral instructions, Saint Simeon wrote letters about repentance, monasticism, about the Incarnation of Christ, and about the future Judgment.

After the death of his Elder, Saint Simeon’s life followed a certain pattern. From the rising of the sun until mid-afternoon he read books and copied Holy Scripture. Then he rose and prayed all night. When the new day began, he rested somewhat, then began his usual Rule of prayer.

Saint Simeon concluded his efforts on the second column, and by God’s dispensation, settled upon the Wonderful Mountain, having become an experienced Elder to the monks in his monastery.

The ascent to Wonderful Mountain was marked by a vision of the Lord, standing atop a column. Saint Simeon continued his efforts at this place where he saw the Lord, at first upon a stone, and then upon a pillar.

Future events were revealed to Saint Simeon, and so he foretold the death of Archbishop Ephraim of Antioch, and the illness of Bishop Domnus, which overtook him as punishment for his lack of pity. Finally, Saint Simeon predicted an earthquake for the city of Antioch and urged all the inhabitants to repent of their sins.

Saint Simeon established a monastery on Wonderful Mountain, where the sick people he healed built a church in gratitude for the mercy shown them. The saint prayed for a spring of water for the needs of the monastery, and once during a shortage of grain, the granaries of the monastery were filled with wheat by his prayers.

In the year 560 the holy ascetic was ordained to the priesthood by Dionysius, Bishop of Seleukia.

At age seventy-five Saint Simeon was warned by the Lord of his impending end. He summoned the brethren of the monastery, instructed them in a farewell talk, and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord in the year 596, having toiled as a stylite for sixty-eight years.

After death, the saint worked miracles just as he had when alive. He healed the blind, the lame and the leprous, saving many from wild beasts, casting out devils and raising the dead.

Troparion — Tone 1

Dweller of the desert and angel in the body, / you were shown to be a wonder-worker, our God-bearing Father Simeon. / You received heavenly gifts through fasting, vigil, and prayer: / healing the sick and the souls of those drawn to you by faith. / Glory to Him who gave you strength! / Glory to Him who granted you a crown! / Glory to Him who through you grants healing to all!

Tr by oca.org

Orthodox Calendar, May 24 Saint Blandina the Confessor of Iași The Servant of God, Blandina Gobjilă, was born on February 24, 1906, in the village of Grușenți-Chelmești in Bessarabia, to devout parents, the priest Zaharia and Serafima, who from her infancy planted in her heart humility and love for the holy services.
