Orthodox Calendar, May 17<\/h1>\n

Saint Andronicus and his wife Junia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Apostle of the Seventy and Saint Junia were relatives of the holy Apostle Paul. They labored much, preaching the Gospel to pagans. Saint Paul mentions them in his Epistle to the Romans: \u201cSalute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and fellow prisoners, who are of note among the Apostles, who also were in Christ, before me\u201d (Romans 16:7).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Saint Andronicus was made Bishop of Pannonia, but his preaching also took him and Saint Junia to other lands, far from the boundaries of his diocese. Through the efforts of Saints Andronicus and Junia, the Church of Christ was strengthened, pagans were converted to the knowledge of God, many pagan temples closed, and in their place, Christian churches were built. The service in honor of these saints states that they suffered martyrdom for Christ.<\/p>\n

In the fifth century, during the reign of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius, their holy relics were uncovered on the outskirts of Constantinople together with the relics of other martyrs at the gate of Eugenius (February 22).<\/p>\n

It was revealed to the pious cleric Nicholas Kalligraphos that among the relics of these seventeen martyrs were the relics of the holy Apostle Andronicus. Afterward, a magnificent church was built on this spot.<\/p>\n

Troparion, tone 3:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Holy Apostle Andronicus entreat the merciful God to grant our souls forgiveness of transgressions.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Church also celebrates today Venerables Nectarios and Theophan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

6th Sunday after Pascha<\/h1>\n

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, \u201cRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cNeither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.\u201d When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.<\/p>\n

And He said to him, \u201cGo, wash in the pool of Siloam\u201d (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, \u201cIs not this he who sat and begged?\u201d Some said, \u201cThis is he.\u201d Others said, \u201cHe is like him.\u201d He said, \u201cI am he.\u201d Therefore they said to him, \u201cHow were your eyes opened?\u201d He answered and said, \u201cA Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, \u2018Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.\u2019 So I went and washed, and I received sight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then they said to him, \u201cWhere is He?\u201d He said, \u201cI do not know.\u201d They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, \u201cHe put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.\u201d Therefore some of the Pharisees said, \u201cThis Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.\u201d Others said, \u201cHow can a man who is a sinner do such signs?\u201d And there was a division among them.<\/p>\n

They said to the blind man again, \u201cWhat do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?\u201d He said, \u201cHe is a prophet.\u201d But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, \u201cIs this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?\u201d His parents answered them and said, \u201cWe know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, \u201cHe is of age; ask him.\u201d So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, \u201cGive God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.\u201d He answered and said, \u201cWhether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then they said to him again, \u201cWhat did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?\u201d He answered them, \u201cI told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?\u201d Then they reviled him and said, \u201cYou are His disciple, but we are Moses\u2019 disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man answered and said to them, \u201cWhy, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.\u201d They answered and said to him, \u201cYou were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?\u201dAnd they cast him out.<\/p>\n

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, \u201cDo you believe in the Son of God?\u201d He answered and said, \u201cWho is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?\u201d And Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.\u201d Then he said, \u201cLord, I believe!\u201d And he worshiped Him.<\/p>\n
