Xenophon, Maria, Arcadius and John of Constantinople"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Orthodox Calendar January 25<\/h1>\n<h3>32nd Sunday after Pentecost (<em><strong>of Zacchaeus<\/strong><\/em>)<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<article>\n<dl class=\"reading\">\n<dd>Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.\u00a0Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.\u00a0And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.\u00a0So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.\u00a0And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, \u201cZacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.\u201d\u00a0So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.\u00a0But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, \u201cHe has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.\u201d\u00a0Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, \u201cLook, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.\u201d\u00a0And Jesus said to him, \u201cToday salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;\u00a0for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.\u201d<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/article>\n<\/blockquote>\n<footer class=\"article-footer clearfix\">\n<div class=\"previous\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Luke 19:1-10<\/div>\n<\/footer>\n<h3><strong>Saint Joseph the Merciful, Metropolitan of Moldavia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Metropolitan Iosif Naniescu, canonized under the name of the <strong>Holy Hierarch Joseph the Merciful, Metropolitan of Moldavia<\/strong>,\u00a0was born in 1820 into the family of the priest Ananias Mihalache, receiving the name of John at Baptism.<\/p>\n<p>Left fatherless at the age of 1, he was raised by his mother, Theodosia, until at the age of 10 he was entrusted to the care of a relative, Hierodeacon Theophylact of Frumoasa Monastery in Bessarabia.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p9\" data-field=\"paragraph\">Accompanied by him, in 1831, he went to Ia\u015fi to live in the Monastery of St. Spyridon, which was then under the leadership of bishop Varlaam Cuza Sardeo.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p10\" data-field=\"paragraph\">Joining him on this, in 1831, he came to Iasi, living in the Monastery \u2018St. Spiridon\u2019, which is then under the leadership of Archbishop Varlaam Cuza Sardeon. He followed Hierodeacon Theophylact to the Monastery of the Holy Prophet Samuel in Foc\u015fani, where, on November 23, 1835, he was tonsured into monasticism by Bishop Chesarie, and the next day he was ordained a hierodeacon.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p11\" data-field=\"paragraph\">He attended the courses of the newly-established seminary in Buz\u0103u from 1836 to 1840, then those of St. Sava\u2019s in Bucharest from 1840 to 1847. He fulfilled the obediences of the rector of \u015eerb\u0103ne\u015fti-Morunglavu Monastery from 1849 to 1857, and G\u0103iseni Monastery from 1857 to 1863, was ordained a hieromonk on August 29, 1850, and elevated to the rank of archimandrite in 1860.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p12\" data-field=\"paragraph\">For a short period (1863-1864) he was the abbot at S\u0103rindar Monastery in Bucharest. He also worked as a professor of religion at the Gh. Lazarus School (1864-1866), the \u201cMatei Basarab\u201d Lyceum (1866-1873) and at the \u201cCarol I\u201d School (1867-1873).<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p13\" data-field=\"paragraph\">On April 23, 1872, he was consecrated as a bishop, and on January 18, 1873 he was appointed bishop of Arges, where he pastored for a short time, until his election, on June 10, 1875, as metropolitan of Moldavia. He was installed in Ia\u015fi on July 6, 1875, where he shepherded until his death on January 26, 1902.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p13\" data-field=\"paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-306239\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Sf-Iosif-cel-Milostiv.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Saint Xenophon<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The saint, his wife Maria, and their sons Arcadius and John were noted citizens of Constantinople and lived in the fifth century. Despite their riches and position, they distinguished themselves by their simplicity of soul and goodness of heart. Wishing to give their sons John and Arcadius a more complete education, they sent them off to the Phoenician city of Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>By divine Providence, the ship on which both brothers sailed was wrecked. The waves tossed the brothers ashore at different places. Grieved at being separated, the brothers dedicated themselves to God and became monks. For a long time, the parents had no news of their children and presumed them to be dead.<\/p>\n<p>Xenophon, however, already quite old, maintained a firm hope in the Lord and consoled his wife Maria, telling her not to be sad, but to believe that the Lord watched over their children. After several years the couple made a pilgrimage to the holy places, and at Jerusalem they met their sons, living in asceticism at different monasteries. The joyful parents gave thanks to the Lord for reuniting the family.<\/p>\n<p>Saints Xenophon and Maria went to separate monasteries and dedicated themselves to God. The monks Arcadius and John, having taken leave of their parents, went out into the wilderness, where after long ascetic toil they were glorified by gifts of wonderworking and discernment.
